Newnan on our mind
My wife and I currently resides in Brooklyn,NY. We will be heading to GA (first visit) some time this year for a short vacation from all the hustle and bustle here in NY. I just turn Fifty and my wife 46. We have no children of our own, but we are very active in helping children who are less fortunate (we are very active in the church - Baptist). We have been reading this forum for quite sometime now and have finally muster up some courage to become a member to ascertain information about GA, specifically (Stonebridge subdivision) in Newnan County or similar Community/County. So far we have not read anything negative about this area. What makes this city stands out from some of the other cites? What we love most about Newnan from what we gather from this forum is (1) low crime rate (2) easy commute to Atlanta (3) lots of stores and restuarants (4) very rural. I'm not sure about it's diversity? We love a little bit of different flavors when it comes to residents in the neighbourhood. In Brooklyn,NY where we live residents are from all walks of life. We plan to retire in a few years and would love to make GA our retirement home. Thanks for all the lovely posts and we hope to hear from you soon.
regards,
Michael/Janis

Newnan is a really nice area and the have done a lot of building there so it isnt as "rural" as it used to be but it still gives that feeling
besides it is the home of Alan Jackson and Doug Stone who could ask for more

Alan Jackson's gated home I believe is right off Highway 34
the song he sings, called "DRIVE" talks about Thigpen Rd which is right off Highway 34 as well. Great area, but like most of Georgia, Its becoming crowded and $$ive fast!!!

I use to live in Columbus ( a hour south of Newnan) and I moved to Long Island last year.
Anyway, I see why New Yorkers have a tough time adjusting to another lifestyle. Everything you could ask for is within a 10 mile radius.
Being from Ga, I can tell you there are a lot of small towns, and you might get stuck living in the sticks(way out in the country) and have to drive 20 miles to get to the nearest supermarket ( btw, we call those grocery stores in GA).
Newnan has great diversity, it is right off of I-85 interstate, so it is a straight shot to Atlanta. Also it provides great shopping for you and the wife.
Good luck in your move

dncngrl1964, Braves_fan, ~peaches~
Thank you all so much! We are absolutely sold on your response(s). My wife and I did the google earth thing (Pro edition) to get a birds eye view (image) of Newnan and the surrounding area and we were so impressed by what we saw. Based on dncngrl1964 comment Newnan is not "rural" after all. ~peaches~ - At the office where I work (Wall Street) the Controller and Assit.Controller both live in L.I. Stony Brook/West Islip respectively, so we share something in common, and yes we do admire your sense of humor . braves_fan/dncngrl1964 - Sorry to disappoint you guys, but we are not big fans of country music - no offense here, but we do occasionally listen once in awhile. I guess we have to make some adjustment when we move there I have a burning question that I neglected to mention in our initial post, which is in regard to the pollen count in GA. You see, my wife suffers alot from severe sinusitis. This is an ongoing problem that we both have to deal with all the time because of her health condition. Should we be more concerned, now that we plan to relocate to GA in the near future? Does anyone have any info. or insights about "Stonebridge" subdivision. As always thank you all so much, your input is greatly appreciated, and keep up the good work.

I live in Newnan and I like it very much. The crime rate is pretty low over all, but there are some seedy areas in town you'd want to stay away from. It's definitely a good commute to the airport and downtown, but it'll take you a little longer to travel north of the city where a lot of the jobs are. Newnan seems to get a new store everyday, we have every kind of store you could imagine and they're currently constructing a HUGE retail center with a Dillards department store, barnes and noble and lots of other stuff. There are also lots of quaint stores and upscale boutiques in historic downtown Newnan. Newnan has an unbelievable historic district that is so picturesque and cozy with lots of beutiful old houses on tree lined streets. The historical society has a tour of homes several times a year. Of course there are plenty of new houses in new subdivisions in Newnan as well, with Stonebridge being one of the nicer ones in my opinion. It's close to everything in a nice and growing area a little east of Newnan. The traffic can be a little hectic sometimes though. Many parts of Coweta county are still very rural, but Newnan isn't anymore. As far as diversity goes, it's getting there (there's a large Indian population living in my subdivision) but Newnan for the moment is still primarily made up of just white and black. Even though we go to school and enjoy our city together, things can be somewhat segregated. Still, there's not a lot of racism here. There is still plenty of diversity when it comes to cuisine. We have Mexican, latin American, peruvian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, other Asian, German, Italian, all that stuff. Probably not very impressive for a couple of New Yorkers but this is a different place and that's pretty good for Newnan. You can travel a little farther out and find even more types of ethnic cuisine.
Unfortunately, a lot of people aren't thrilled about the growth, especially home grown citizens, but I think you'll understand once you get here. They just don't want Newnan to lose its charm in the whirlwing of growth. I don't think it will though; Downtown Newnan is hotter that ever now. Overall, I think you'll like Newnan, but be sure to check it out for yourselves as well. ope I answered all of your questions, and I hope you make Newnan home!
PS. Unfortunately, the pollen can get very bad in the spring. This year, everything was heavily coated in pollen for about two weeks. However, that's worse that the norm, and the pollen isn't so bad that a claritin can't take care of it.

Newnan is a pretty historic little town. There are so many other great ones within an hour or so of metro Atlanta. Property may be a little more expensive in Newnan than some of the others. South of Atlanta is defintely less expensive than north. Also consider, Covington, Monticello, Lawrencviile, Cedartown. When you say diversity, do you want it or not want it?

Belinda C,
Those areas you mentioned I'm quite sure are very nice places to live, but we are going to stick with our first love.....Newnan. My wife suggest we look at other places besides Newnan, so I guess we'll be taking that into consideration. My former co-worker moved to Snellville,GA from Queens,NY three years ago, so we will definitely venture up north and check out those areas. Thanks for the feedback.

Tdiddy0027,
What more can I say. I'm just overwhelmed and lost for words from your response. I couldn't have asked for anything more - just what the doctor ordered. Not only did you answered my questions, but you went above and beyond my expectation with such explicit details. Thanks a million!!!!

I forget to answer your question regarding do I want diversity? (sorry). Yes!! absolutely, without a doubt. I'm 100% in favor of people with different ethnic background who resides in the community, so as to share their distinctive cultural traits whether it's their racial, linguistic, or religious heritage.
