I must say that both cities have nice projects going on around town that seem like it has both cities looking in the right direction. Most of population growth in both of these areas are going on in suburban counties. To say "Macon stop growing, Augusta is still growing" is an exaggeration.

I want all the 2nd tier cities to grow.... But you have to admit Augusta is not competiting against Macon. The only GA city in 2009 Augusta is competiting against is Savannah.. 2007-2008 number of new residents.

Augusta MSA 5,906
Savannah MSA 5,046
Macon MSA 946
Columbus MSA 746

Augusta excluding Hephzibah and Blythe. Gained 1,740 from 2007-2008

Richmond county including Hephzibah and Blythe. 1,843 from 2007-2008

Macon MSA- Bibb, Crawford, Jones, Monroe, Twiggs counties gained 946 people from 2007-2008.

Richmond county gained 1,843. Macon MSA gained 946 people.

Augusta MSA gained six times as many people as Macon MSA

Augusta MSA gained three times as many people as Macon CSA. Your over talked fast growing suburb Warner Robins is apart of your CSA.

Bibb county may be growing, but the city of Macon is still losing population. Richmond county and the city of Augusta are growing. Richmond county is adding more people than the entire Macon metropolitan area.

In 2007-2008 Macon MSA gained 946 people. Richmond county gained 1,843.

Do you really believe this? One city is losing population, and the other is growing.

The city population would be considered Richmond County Balance (excluding Hephzibah and Blythe) since Augusta is consolidated with Richmond county. It was my understanding that the majority of the population gain occurred in Hephzibah, which counts as far as Richmond County, but not Augusta.

This table should be very helpful. it shows census population estimates for every county in Georgia for each year between 2000 and 2007. 2008 estimates are on the main fact sheet by doing a quick search.
Population Est. Counties

here is another table of cities in Georgia

The estimates are based on July 1, 2008. At that time, the city of Augusta was estimated to have a population of 194,149, and increase of 1.1 percent over the July 1, 2007 estimate of 192,409. The city of Augusta is ranked as the 113th most populated city in the U.S.
Richmond County, which includes Augusta, Hephzibah, and Blythe, also saw an increase from 197,643 in 2007 to 199,486 in 2008.

1.1% increase is not too shabby for Augusta. It would be nice to see the city eventually break the 200K barrier which shouldn't be that far off, if it keeps the momentum.
The real amazing story is Atlanta though.. it is really gaining population, and for many years it was losing people to the burbs.

Lol come on now Lil musket. I know you're biased against Augusta sometimes.... But seriously, Hephzibah-Blythe-Mcbean gaining more people than Augusta? The city of Augusta gained 1,740 and Richmond county gained 1,843..... 103 people moved to Hephzibah, Blythe, and Mcbean.

For many years Hephzibah was gaining more ppl than Augusta.. the area actually encompasses a lot of land in South Richmond County. For the first half of the decade Augusta was losing population, but Hephzibah was still gaining people. It would be interesting to see where these gains are occurring, what areas of the county are seeing the growth. I would imagine most of it is in South Richmond County.

Actually it doesn't necessarily mean that those people MOVED to Augusta. The bulk of it is from natural population gain, ie increased births and decreased death rates. A 1.1% rate is about right for natural population gain. When you start seeing rates above that like in the 3% and above it shows migration into the area.
