Default Relocating to Georgia from Florida

I am a single parent with an 11 year old son. I am looking to move to the Perry, Byron, Hawkinsville area. My son is in the gifted class here in Florida, so I want to make sure that he gets into a good school in Georgia to continue to excel. I am worried about the school calendar though. I saw that they have a week off in October, another one in November, almost 3 weeks at Christmas, another week in February and again in the spring. What do working parents do with their children for all of these vacations? I can't believe these kids are learning anything when they rarely attend school. Do they have afterschool activities to keep the kids occupied while parents work? How can I get a relocation package with information? I'm looking for a nice neighborhood with children in the 150-200K range. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

While I can't help you with the specific locations, the school calendar you are talking about is either called year round or balanced and those schools only have 6 weeks off in summer. Presuming you are paying for child care in the summer, you would just do the same thing doing those odd weeks off. Local child care providers and community organizations generally offer camps and child care the way they do in the summer. Hope this helps.

I wouldn't recommend moving to Hooterville (Hawkinsville). Unless you have mega $$$ or were born and raised here, you will always be treated as an outsider. We currently have one grocery store, which seems to get all the leftovers and rejects all the other Harvey's won't take. There is really no where to shop for school clothes, supples, Christmas/Birthday gifts, etc. If you need to go shopping, other than at the dollar store, or want to eat a nice meal out, you will need to drive to Warner Robins or Macon. I would recommend a private school before sending them to the public school here.
