Default Looking for Guyton area residents!!

I would like to know the advantages and disadvantages of the Guyton, Ga. area. We really like it so far and are considering buying a home there. I guess it will be a change from New Jersey, but my son (12) is my big concern. Is there a 4H, or youth activities for kids 12-13 (he's a really good kid - and my best buddy) Would appreciate info. NF

cpowers21 will become famous soon enoughcpowers21 will become famous soon enough
Advantages: Not overly developed, has a country feel to it, good schools, homes are a little more affordable
Disadvantages: Not a lot of shopping around, longer commute time to Savannah, not a lot to do

I am not sure about 4H's or youth activities.

Guyton: the city is very nice. lots of old houses and the Christmas tour of homes is very popular. majority of the residents are Old South
the entire west side of 'fingham County is refered to as 'Guyton' it is "Country"

All other Islands are only accessible by boat. and are mostly state owned: preserved and beautiful. This is what sets the Georgia coast apart from the overdeveloped Fl and SC coasts.

Sapelo Island can see virtually every facet of a barrier island's natural community, from the forested uplands, to the vast salt marsh, and the complex beach and dunes systems.
Also a big plus is that most of Georgias barrier islands have not been developed. there are no bridges. The Dunes have not been leveled and built upon. They are quite a marvel to see what the 3 dunes should be like on the developed islands. Visit Cumberland Island and hike through the dunes to the beach, awesome....................bring plenty of water!

How is the job market in Savannah?
The ports are the biggest employer: distribution warehouses trucking
Tourism is big
With all of the retirees moving in the hospitals are expanding and nurses are in demand, geriatric everything....................

'Buy Dry' campaign urges consumers to be wary of homes built in wetlands
The entire lower coastal plain meets the strict definition of a wetland.
but if it were strictly enforced then all development would be on the upper coastal plain......north of Oliver and Newington!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our very good friends moved to Guyton last year and they really love it there. However, for entertainment they have to go to Savannah or to Hilton Head. Our friend commutes to Savannah for work and it is a very easy drive with little traffic. I'm not sure about the activities for your child. We are visiting them this summer, we can hardly wait!

If your buying a home you better find out about the taxes. It was on tonites news that the property values were just doubled which will increase the taxes considerably!

Default Lots of drug problems in the schools

Moved to Guyton to get kids out of Savannah schools. The bar is much lower in the schools too. I wasn't impressed.

We relocated a year ago to Rincon which is next to Guyton. Trust me, you will want to move to the Rincon area, this is where you will be most of the time and it is booming out here. They are building like crazy. The school system is set up by county so Effingham county is way better then Chatham county which covers Savannah and Pooler/Godley Station area. One of my co workers daughter is in the 4H club and he says she likes it.

I also know a couple of people that I work with and they live in Guyton and they both said they wished that they would have bought a home in Rincon just to have more kids for theirs to play with.

Good luck and yes it will be different then NJ lol, you have to pump your own gas down here oh speaking of gas, it is June 6th and the average price of gas around here is 2.98/gal
