Depends on the industry...the medical field, computer stuf, etc seems to be doing okay (relativaly...compared to 5 or 10 years ago everyone is hurting!). If you are in the development industry (architecture, development, real estate) then it blows...everywhere around the state!

What kind of job are you looking for? Athens most recent unemployment rate is 7.6%, the lowest of the state's metropolitan areas. Of course, the music scene around here is pretty good with a lot of clubs downtown.

None of the fast food places have "help wanted" signs out. There are plenty of pizza delivery types all over despite some of the neighborhoods they have to go into. And we have plenty of "iffy" neighborhoods. Our second largest employer, Athens Regional Medical Center has been laying off. We have lost over a 1000 production jobs in our vicinity---connected with homebuilding industry. The university is hinting of job layoffs. You can go online with ACC government and see what they have and also the same with UGA. But, if you are coming here to look for a job, then 1. it will not be well paid and 2. you better have a few months of cash with you if not more. It is tough all over in GA and Athens is no exception. Whatever the "official" unemployment figures are, add 5 percent to it or more. Unemployment figures are notoriously conservative.

Bottomline? If you have a job where you are, then stay there.
