This list is group by pop not by size...... In size, Macon is much larger than Athens, Roswell and Sandy Springs ......

Athens and Macon are NOT about the SAME size.....The proper City of Athens is much smaller than Macon and Albany; Athens is more similar to W.Robins in proper size and Pop... the Consolidation makes it seem larger....on paper.....As well as Augusta and Columbus......
Athens pop before the Consolidation in 1991 was less 50,000 and Macon Pop was 125,000 which has decrease over years to about 97,000 because the people are moving out to the newly developed areas of Bibb county right outside the city.... A visit to both city it's clear which is really larger.......

Athens.....
Macon
There is no way you could ever think that Athens is the size of Macon.......

Athens-Clarke County, which is consolidated, has a population of well over 100,000. The Athens MSA (metroplitain area) population is about 190,000. It still has a small town feel, though with a thriving downtown scene for dining and entertainment. The area is very highly influenced by the University of Georgia and much of the industry/businesses in the area are university centric.

The population of Athens-Clarke is around 120,000.. but you have to remember that Clarke county is the smallest county in Georgia geographically.
As for downtowns.. I'll take Athens over Macon or Columbus anyday.

Five of those cities are suburbs of Atlanta.
That area's gonna turn into LA East one day.

It all depends on how you look at things.
Being the Hub cities of their metros, Augusta, Macon, Columbus, Savannah, Athens and Albany will be more of true stand alone cities than any "suburb" of ATL regardless if their population passes any of them.
Savannah has a smaller pop than Columbus and Augusta, though its urban core seems more "city" than those two places. Macon feels more city than Columbus. In my opinion, Macon/Augusta feel similar with Augusta just being a slighty bigger version of the same type of place and Columbus/Athens/Albany feel similar.....with Columbus just being bigger...same feel to it as those two though.
ATL and Savannah.....are the classes of GA to me.
