I'm not originally from this area, moved from rural south GA to the Atlanta area a few years ago. We've been in Cobb Co. and find that it's a good spot. It's sandwiched between Atlanta and Kennesaw, and prices are better than both of those. There are good and bad areas, we actually drove out to check out different neighborhoods to get an idea of safety. But, we were finding an apartment, not a house. I hope you find what you're looking for!

Umm, no- crime is not "a part of ANY neighborhood". If you're coming from southcentral LA, you've obviously built up a high tolerance for crime, and you're willing to accept it as "part of the neighborhood". If that's the case, there are plenty of areas that will work for you- especially the gentrifying areas inside the city where people make comments like "the crimes not so bad here- we've only been broken into twice in the past year, but they were just smash-and-grabs". That may work for you, but for many, it's totally unacceptable.

We live in a small town north of Atlanta where the "crime" consists of the occasional loud argument that someone calls the cops on, or a local teen stealing an IPod out of an unlocked car in the driveway. That's the level of crime that's acceptable to me.

WRT racism, it exists everywhere, and Atlanta's no exception, regardless of what area of town you live in. You won't however, have to deal with cross burnings, etc.- that level of stuff hasn't happened in some time, even in the extreme rural areas. Even 35 miles out of town, we've got a number of black neighbors, and they don't experience any issues- they're as much a part of the neighborhood as anyone else.

For what you want to spend, I would recommend some of the eastern Gwinnett County communities such as Suwanee, Dacula, Lawrenceville, and Grayson. There are some pretty good schools there, lower taxes than closer into the city, and a good racial mix (particularly in Lawrenceville).

I appreciate the reply and the link. You all on here are wonderful!!!
The Mississippi Burning stereotype of the south is obsolete. You would never encounter anything like that in any part of Georgia. I live in the Northwest Georgia mountains, or "the sticks", and have never seen anything in all of my 30 yrs. The most racism I have ever encountered has been in the North East, and Mid-west. Think about it. We live and work together daily. Things are very different than they used to be.

When we moved from NY to Ga, the biggest problem we had from some of the people were that we were "Yankees", some people still aren't over that war...
