English couple emigrating to Georgia
Hello to everyone in Georgia,
I wonder if anyone out there may be able to give us some advice regarding our move to Georgia.
We are currently living in England waiting for our visa's, it's been a long wait because my brother is sponcering us as he is American, even so it's taking us approximately 12 years to get our green cards.
We have had numerious holidays in America, usually to Florida which was initially where we intended to settle, but with the terrible hurricains and the spiraling cost of real estate we've decided to look further afield and am I glad we did because I'm sure that Georgia is the place for us.
We are both 50, I run my own painting and decorating business and my wife is an office manager for a local government department.
Ideally what we are looking for is a small to medium sized town which is not too remote and we hope to buy a property on a newish community so we have neighbors close by so we don't feel isolated.
We are looking to spend approximately $200 to $250k on a property and we dont really want to live in a busy tourist area.
If anyone thinks they might know where our ideal town may be could you please let me know as we are hoping to pop over later this year to see if Georgia is as beautiful as people say it is.
I have just one more question, the one job I would like to d in the States is that of a postman because I enjoy working outside and meeting people and it would be great to get paid for doing just that but people have said that it is notoriously difficult to get jobs with US Mail does anyone know if this is the case?
Many thanks for any help or advice anyone can offer us on relocating to your beautiful State.
Lee

Hi, Lee. You might visit Americus, Georgia, and have a look around. It is a small, friendly town in the southwestern part of the state. We have some very nice neighborhoods here, a good hospital, good shopping, and we are very retiree friendly. Best wishes as you continue your search for a new home. You can learn a lot about us simply by doing a search on line for Americus, Georgia. Sincerely, Michael Dixon

Hi Lee
Glad to see you are moving to Georgia, we look forward to having you. I would recommend looking into Woodstock, Marietta or Cumming GA.
I myself live in Canton GA. It's about 45 minute drive to downtown Atlanta. Woodstock is definitely a must to look into. It's also close to Lake Allatoona and the North Georgia Mountains. House prices are inexpensive and the people are wonderful.
I am orginally from South Africa (Port Elizabeth) and have made Atlanta my home. It really is a wonderful place. My website will be of help to you, as it has some really interesting information!
Let me know if you have any questions Lee,
Brent

Lee, Georgia is very beautiful, I have lived here for a little over a year and I find it breathtaking, I live in Dade county Georgia, most go where is that.. so easiest way to tell people is Lookout Mountain, it is a nice community town and close to several cities. I am in the process of trying to sell my home here sadly so that I may move closer to Florida to be near my dad for health reasons. Maybe we will both get lucky and you will find the perfect place to purchase and I will find the perfect buyer.. Good luck in your adventure.

Hi All,
May I Just say a big thank you to Michael, Brent, Lori & Danielle
for the info that they have supplied.
It really is nice to see that people are so proud of the areas they live in.
I'm astounded by the response we've had, I'm sure its down to that good old southern hospitality!
I hope that Lori's dad's health improves, I'm sure when he has you near by it will do him the world of good.

Georgia on my mind
Hello. I am a Canadian Brit (my mum's from London - within the "sound of the Bells"). I've recently married an American in Illinois and we've just found a gorgeous wee place called Saint Marys, on the border or Georgia and Florida. I searched on the internet for a small town that embodied the grace and beauty of "the South"; the charm, antiquity and beauty imbued with the great breath of the sea...and we found it. Please...look into this delightful city. We'll be there by March 5th and would welcome fellow "outlanders"

Hi Alex,
Many thanks for your reply.
Saint Mary's sounds like a beautiful place to live and we will definately put it on our list of places we must see when we do our tour.

I hope that you will consider Savannah as your destination. It is a beautiful area known for its southern charm and hospitality. It felt like home from our first visit. If you need information about the city and surrounding area, you can go to the city websight.

Washington Georgia
Although I live in Florida I have visited a very nice town in Georgia called Washington. There are many historic houses (not as old as English), the people are very friendly and there is a lot of community spirit. Look at some of the real estate listings at removed this real estate agent is very nice and will really show you around. Also visit the town website at www.washingtonwilkes.org This town is 2 hours east of Atlanta, about 45 minutes from the University of Georgia and 1 hour from Augusta (home of the golfing Masters Tournament) Good Luck! I could also tell you where there are some charming towns in Florida - if you stay away from the coast the hurricanes really aren't that bad.

Hi again, apparently this site doesn't like commercial web sites listed, but if you do a search for georgia land for sale you should be able to find the web site showing lots of homes and property for sale in the Washington area, it will give you an idea of the types of property and prices.
