I live in Michigan and am about to move to Georgia within the next couple of weeks. I am a mother of 4 (ages 7,6,5,&1). I am african american and I work as a CNA. I am trying to start my life over and give my children a better chance with more options. My fiancee will also be joining me in January. He enjoys making musice. So I need advice on areas that would be good for my family. No i have to find a job apartment and everything. I am truely starting over.

Good luck with that. Not sure if you're talking about CNA as in "Certified Nursing Assistant" or "Certified Novell Administrator"- I'll assume the former. That said, while nursing-related jobs still exist, they're not as plentiful as they used to be, and they're spread out all over. Have you even begun to narrow down your possible choices? Why do you have to move "in the next couple of weeks"? Do you have 3-6 months of savings to cover you while you're trying to find work? What kind of budget do you have for housing? Have you investigated childcare costs? Why Georgia?

I know it sounds like I'm asking more questions than I'm answering, but you're talking about a major move, and it doesn't sound like there's been all that much thought put into it.

I second Bob's advice. As I keep telling people, Atlanta is not the mecca, 21st century gold rush, whatever for jobs. Any major move takes planning and thought, even in a good economy. Now is not the time to make snap decisions.

I'm going to presume you were talking about nursing. There are CNA jobs here, but there is a lot of competition for each job posted. A lot depends on your experience, and area of expertise. As for work as a musician, I would assume it is as secure a career option in Atlanta as anywhere else. A lot of people presume that the cost of living is a lot lower here than elsewhere, and sadly that really is no longer true, with the exception perhaps being real estate. The quality of public elementary schools in Atlanta is very variable, where I'm assuming your older 3 will be. Research schools very carefully. My main suggestion to you would be to try to establish employment before moving, even if you have to spend a couple of hundred bucks attending interviews.

Going to be tough to find a job in this economy. Athens has a great music scene and plenty of medical facilities. It is also a very diverse community, with the influence of the University of Georgia. It also has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state right now.
