Default Information on Habersham County, please

I was raised in Ft. Lauderdale, way back when, when it was still a small town. Then it was "discovered", and the folks from up north moved in. Rather than adapt to what they liked enough to move there, they demanded that things be changed to suit them.Because of their large (condo) voting blocks, they got what they wanted.

I was finally fed up enough to leave in 1986. I moved to Vermont, stayed there for 20 years, and loved it for the most part. I stayed away from the tourist areas, the ski mountains, etc.

I got married a few years ago to a woman I had known when I lived in Ft. Laud. Her family was still in Lauderdale, and we relocated to N. Fl. about four years ago.

The summers are a killer for me. I enjoy being outdoors too much to remain cooped up in an air conditioned home for four months. The area is rural - not "quaint!"- and the folks are great. I wouldn't change anything. And no N.Y. attitudes, either.

I read some of the posts on this forum and just have to shake my head. So many folks seem to live in a cloud. They want small, quaint, no crime, etc, but want to be near to a city so they can get their city fix. If there were such places, wouldn't everybody want to live there?

Ok, I've vented. I feel much better now.

I am contemplating a move to Haversham County. I've been there several times and like it quite a bit. House prices seem reasonable, taxes aren't too bad, schools are ok. My wife can still get to Ft. Lauderdale in a (long) days drive.

I would be grateful for any information provided about Haversham County, Clarksville in particular. Does it really rain all the time, Is it being changed by newcomers influences? I'm retired now, so the employment situation doesn't concern me. Clarkesville is not too far from Helen. That scares me. I see all the 2nd. homes on the market, mostly stamped out log "cabins". I will just want to be left alone, and to be able to do some volunteer work. I want to live in a regular house, have a place for my wife's two horses, etc. I don't want to change anything except my lifestyle.

Can you help? Thanks.

Paul

Although I haven't been up there for a couple of years, I think Clarkesville is still pretty much as it has been - a great little town full of wonderful, welcoming people.

Helen is in White County, and Habersham frankly doesn't have the desire to become like it at all.

Contact the local Chamber for some info, but imo, you picked one of the best places to settle in up there.

Good luck.

I find Clarkesville very appealing...very much of the 'small-town' feel that you desire. Does it rain all the time? No, and certainly not any more than it does in northern FL.
One impression that I have when passing through is that there seems to be a large # of seniors out and about. I infer that Clarkesville is somewhat of a retirement haven, but that is true of many other north GA communities as well.
