Spread out cities would be Atlanta, Columbus, and Augusta.

Athens is more than twice as big as Ocala, and is in the process of spreading out. It influences the growth of the 6 surrounding counties. Of course, it is not at all like the spread around Atlanta. It is the fifth largest city in Ga, and, it has the lowest unemployment rate of the major cities, well below both the state and national rates.

You can go to cites like cityrating and find out crime statistics of cities. Strangely, it doesn't list Augusta. However, it does show that Athens has a much lower rate than Savannah, Atlanta or Columbus. And much lower than Ocala. Or, you can go to the FBI website and get their data and compare.

That would be pointless, jmo.
There will be parts of each and every city that are safer, have less crime than other areas.
The metro Atlanta area includes 6-8 counties and over 5,000,000 people. FWIW.

Athens is a great city. Lots to do, decently low crime rate- especially compared to Atlanta- and it's less expensive. And there are always jobs around here, because of the turnover of students maybe, not sure. If you are looking for a place to move into as well...
I am looking to sublease my place in a 3 bed/2 bath house. 2 female roommates, both are very nice and quite, not really at home most of the time. Both go to UGA. Total of 3 dogs and 1 cat in house, but 2 of the dogs are only there maybe 2 days out of the week (stay at her boyfriend's house the rest of the time), and the other one stays in the back yard when owner is not at home.
Bedroom comes with bed and dresser, whole house furnished. Rent $450/month including all utilities and trash service. On the North side, in a small, quiet Neighborhood off of Newton Bridge Road. Near loop, about 5 minutes from downtown, and close to stores, but for enough that it's not the "college scene". Fenced in Yard! No deposit or pet fees!
Let me know if you are interested. Need to find a replacement ASAP, moving to a place with a pasture for my horses.
