Default Small Georgia Towns

Hi All, I am new to these forums. So my question is "What are some small towns in North Georgia?" I am originally from Columbus, Georgia and am now living on Coastal Mississippi. I am currently in school receiving my Associates Degree in Criminal Justice for Paroles. My Husband and I currently have 2 boys one is 7 the other is 2. We are looking for something near the mountains, something quaint, and homey feeling, where the whole town shuts down for the football game on Friday night. We rather not be too far away from the city though, so not too big of a travel for work. If anyone out there knows of this existing let me know please.

Chickamauga (Walker County) is the first town that comes to mind. It's close to Chattanooga.

I think Habersham County would fit your description, but it would be 1 1/2 commute to Atlanta or 1 hour to Athens. Dawsonville should be a manageable commute to Gainesville, though.

I'd recommend Gainesville, GA.

I'd recommend Cleveland, Georgia. White County schools. Helen, Georgia (5-10 minute drive) is a small Bavarian style touristy town. Very beautiful place.

I live in Gainesville and don't recommend it at all. We have two small children and are planning to leave. Recent events in my area include a rash of burglaries (1 adult and 3 kids were arrested, the youngest was 11) and last week someone tried to force a boy into his truck in an upscale subdivision just north of here. If you end up in Gainesville, make sure you are north of the lake and do not enroll your kids in Gainesville City Schools. (Hall County is better)
Check GreatSchools.Net for info about school test scores and enrollment.

I might try Dawsonville or somewhere over that way.

Default What about South Georgia?

Valdosta is a Friday night lights kind of town. Lots of family friendly things to do and is close enough to Atlanta, Savannah, Jacksonville, Gainesville (FL) to make day or weekend trips to take in the sights. Abraham Baldwin College in Tifton is 40 minutes away if you want to continue with your current education track or Valdosta State, Valdosta Technical College, and Georgia Military College are all here in town. We have our own theme park but there's no Disney World like congestion.
