Brunswick Ga. and nearby nieghborhoods
Hi All,
We will be relocating to S.E. Georgia in the very near future (4-6 weeks). We are relocating for minimum of 2 years.
My husband will be working on Saint Simon Island. Although we may be able to aquire housing on the island, we are also looking for rental property in the Brunswick and surrounding areas. We prefer a house not an apartment. Most of the rentals I am finding on the island come furnished, which we would prefer our own stuff. The problem, we have 3 dogs. 2 Australian Shepherds and a ****zu mix. And a 16 y.o. son.
Is anybody familiar with any areas welcoming to pets. Our dogs are inside dogs. Would be nice to have a fenced yard, but then again we could walk them. They are not destructive. Two are 8 y.o. and the little one is 2 y.o. Out of the puppy stage. They are not barkers either. Unless something is unexpected.
We will be renting with the possibility of purchasing if we find an area we like, after our Florida home sells.
It has been 8-10 yrs. since I've been to Sea Island. Didn't get much of a chance to explore Brunswick back then. But from what I remember, it appeared to be pretty rough. I could be wrong. And again, it was a long time ago.
Also, if we end up renting a furnished place, is there storage in Brunswick?
We have a storage unit here and probably be leaving that stuff there until we make a final decision, but our stuff thats in the house, we'd like to have closer. Is storage expensive ? One friend suggested we dump all our stuff, but unlike them we have a son, and don't plan on giving up everything we worked hard to aquire. We eventually plan to put down roots in Georgia or Tennessee. Most likely Georgia since that is where my husbands company is.
Please any help or suggestions eagerly welcomed !!!

I haven't found the best places to live near Brunswick. Although we will be visiting this weekend as well as looking at some rental properties. I think I prefer to rent for a while and feel out the areas before I purchase. I'll let you know what I think.

A little about Brunswick
Hello
I can tell you little about Brunswick, Glynn County area, on a little though because I've only been here 4 months myself.
It's not as rough as it seems, the people are pretty cool so far in my stay here. I work on St. Simons and live in Brunswick. I live on the (I think) north end of the county. It's a pretty cool area, quiet neighborhoods. I'm renting an apartment but there a plenty of nice neighborhoods in my section (Harry Driggers Rd.), up Hwy 17, and down Spur 25 on the westside on I-95. They're all short commutes to St. Simons, Hwy. 17 is just off the causeway too. The city is also doing a whole revamping of the downtown area which will probably smooth out some of that roughness. I've seen pleny of my female neighbors walk their dogs late when I come in from out of town, so it's gotta be pretty safe for them to do that. Plus with FLETC (Federal Law Enforcement Training Center), in the county there are plenty of cops, sheriffs, and state patrols everywhere I turn. I hope I helped. Any other questions feel free to ask.
Good Luck, God bless

A Brunswick schools and neighborhoods
Hello
I can tell you little about Brunswick, Glynn County area, on a little though because I've only been here 4 months myself.
There are only 2 public, and 2 private high schools and both publics are only ok from what I've heard. I don't know much about the private shcools but I've been told that the middle and elementary schools are all pretty good. The close neighboring counties aren't any better, I was told the better school is Wayne County, a 45 min. drive west. (Note: I've only been told or heard this, I don't have any children, so don't let me discourage you)
I work on St. Simons and live in Brunswick. I live on the (I think) north end of the county. It's a pretty cool area, quiet neighborhoods. Most places I ran across in my hunt were pet freindly I hope I helped. Any other questions feel free to ask.

Well, we visited for the weekend. Didn't get a whole lot of sight seeing done. But did look at 4 rentals. 1) in the boonies, 2&3) in neighborhoods, and 4) 3 blocks from the beach on Saint Simon Island. They were a very wide variety of homes from older to new, from spacious to cramped. Funny how the older houses were more spacious and the new ones had all the new amenities, but were cramped with neighbors on top of you. We opted for a older house (1980) in the boonies. Haven't finalized everything yet, but are expecting to do so in the next week or so.
Gawain Atwater , I know you have been there only a short time, but when I say "jesup" what comes to mind ? I think the area we are considering is called Oak..... Grove.... mills? About 3 miles west of I95 and 2 miles south of old jesup highway? As I said before, it is boonies,so I'm not really concerned about the neighbors, and I have found the majority of stores (i.e. HOME DEPOT.....) within 5 mile of where we will be.
We stayed off of exit 36. Eventhough the immediate are seemed small it was quite inviting. Everyone and I mean everyone we encountered were extremly friendly and welcoming. I am the type of person to strike up conversation with just about anyone, and suceeded everytime! Not one person shrugged us. And everyone was extremely helpful and offered thier opinion.(which I value) I like talking to people because I learn about different things from different peoples way of thinking. All in all, we fell in love. It was definately slower paced than we are used to here in South Florida, but thats what we are looking for. My 16 y.o. son could of stayed behind in Brunswick. He is anxious to get out of this rat race.
Although the thought of living 3 blocks from the beach is great, what I found on Saint Simon Island, was kind of the same as in traffic and congestion that we are trying to get away from. It was wierd, we drove around Brunswick- Jesup area, and then crossed the bridge and hit gridlock. Not quite as bad as Fort Lauderdale, but made me cringe just the same. I will be content knowing if I want that type of area, it is just minutes away. Saint Simon is Beautiful, (don't get me wrong) but just a bit too touristy for me at this moment. A year in the boonie might just change that, but who knows until you try, right?

salatheel,
My husband will be working in Sea Island. He does heavy timber construction. And will be relocating thru his company. I don't know what kind of work you will be looking for, but quite a few hotels and restaraunts nearby.
It "does" seem really nice, but as I said, we were only there for a weekend.
We fell in love with it. Also Publix ,Home Depot ect. not too far, but far enough.

Brunswick
After moving off of Lake Lanier and to coastal Georgia, I find that the area offers everything you need without the traffic and with the plus of being able to boat, jetski, fish, walk on the beaches (Jekyll best), ride bikes, kayak, hunting, and so much more. It is listed as one of the best places to retire by money magazine.
The people are friendly, unemployment is extremely low, growth is good.
