Dalton--absolutely the way to go. You can get a lot of house in the Dalton area for 200K; I was born and raised here, lived many other places, and moved back here. I think it fits your criteria beautifully! Tons of parks and outdoor stuff, Dalton State college keeps the town young and vibrant and although we've had some bad publicity lately, the crime in this town is mostly running a stop sign or not wearing your seatbelt (I've been busted on this myself!). I have no problem walking around at midnight on any street in this town.
Unfortunately, there are people that post things on this website who have a narrow-minded view because they have nothing to compare this town to. It's hard to take a comment to heart about this town from someone who has only lived here and has basis of comparison. I've spent a lot of time in cities and small towns all over this country and I can tell you from first hand experience, this is a great place!
