Cherokee County is opening a new high school next year off Arnold Mill Road. I'm not sure if they're starting with all grades or not, but I believe it's just going to be 9th and 10th (the current 9th graders that will attend are in the new middle school next door that opened this year).

I went to the the Georgia state high school website www.ghsa.net to compare the new region alignments for 2010-11. Comparing the list to the current region alignments, I found five new schools. My list is not complete, just a scan of schools I didn't recognize:

AAA
Veterans High School, Houston County
New Manchester High School, Douglas County
Lanier High School, Gwinnett County

AA
Coahulla Creek High School, Whitfield County
Coastal High School, Chatham County

All these are scheduled to open next year.

River Ridge High School was already listed in class A for the 2009-10 school year and moving up to AA next year, so it already is considered open even if the actual building itself has not opened. This is the new school on Arnold Mill in Cherokee County.

Everywhere I have lived, there is always someone not happy when a redistricting comes about. In fast growth counties in larger metro areas, it is yearly happening. People buy houses thinking that they will be in one school and then find they will be going an opposite direction.

But it is better than crowding kids into trailers. When an area has rapid growth, you have to build more schools and when you relieve overcrowded schools, you have to draw the lines somewhere. Always, there are people that don't like the new lines drawn.

I think it helps if the powers that be do a fair job. It doesn't make sense to send kids many miles away and pass a school close by.

North Murray High School in Murray County will open in the 2010-2011 school year. It will be a GHSA AA division school and is the first new high school to open within Murray County since all schools were consolidated into Murray County High School back in the 1930's. This is a long awaited project due to the fact that for the past decade, the single Murray County High School has been faced with a large population. This forced Murray to be a GHSA AAAAA division school for many years. We were the only 5-A school in all of North Georgia north of Cherokee County, thus our closest away games were at minimum 120 miles round trip. This, coupled with a lack of funds compared to the richer tax base "Atlanta" 5-A schools, cause many hardships both athletically and academically. The new North Murray High School will include a cosmetology, culinary arts, and other culturally enhanced learning opportunities. It also has started new programs that requires every student to join some form of extracuricular club/activity and has a "club" schedule that allows for extracuricular activity time during normal school hours. North Murray will also put Murray Co. HS back in division AAA, the common division for most NW GA high schools, which will help Murray Co. HS back on its feet as well.
