Default Best Communitees for Retirees

My husband and I are contemplating moving south to leave the cold, dreary winters behind. We are mid-fifties. Both of us would still be working. My husband loves to play golf. I am a tole painter and love to learn new arts. We have been checking into some 55+ active adult communities, mainly for the golf and planned activities. I'm not totally convinced on going this route. We both like vibrant small communities close to larger cities for shopping, cultural activities, airports, etc. Also, would prefer to be within two hours of the beach. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

We seem to be attracting a lot of retirees to coastal GA....Glynn County and northern Camden County. Many retirees are choosing this area over FL - or even moving up here from FL. Glynn County is a golf mecca. Although I haven't had any personal involvement, we seem to have a very active art community.

I am looking for a 55+ area for my parents that is pretty much exactly what you are looking for except I am trying to keep them within 2 or 3 hours of Canton (north of Atlanta) as that is where I live. What they need is a townhouse or condo (they are sick of yard work) in an over 55 only community. I can't find any places that offer that without all the other food and nursing services and my parents are still to young for all of that. They want to live near a lake and near an art community (my mother paints) but they can't afford the $300,000 golf communities and don't want the yard work anyway. They want to be somewhere with other older people so they can make friends and have people to run amuck with and they don't want just any condo or townhouse that is surrounded by a bunch of college kids. If you find anything or even good sources of info please let me know because I can't find anything!!

Go to Google.com and type Country Clubs + Coastal Georgia; there are dozens from Savannah to Saint Marys GA; just a matter of what you want close by, i.e., amenities.
