I am moving to Grand Rapids in a few weeks. I am in love, head over heels, for a house in Alger Heights. It is near the intersection of Blaine and Alger. I have not been to the area, but my family has checked it out a bit for me. I have also done some investigating online myself.

What I have found is that it has a great community of people living there that support one another. But it also seems to have some crime and violence.

Is this true? Would anyone recommend moving to this area or should I keep looking?

Thanks for your help!

That area you're looking at is fine. Get involved with the Alger Heights Neighborhood Association and you'll know everything that is going on and where. I know someone who is and they sound like a fun group, and put on some pretty big events.

Plus you have the new elementary school across the street with a lot of greenspace.

Pretty safe area bounded (notably to the north and northwest) by pretty bad areas. Vehicle break-ins seem to be fairly common.

As mentioned above it's totally fine as long as you know where you're going. A female friend of mine owns a nice little house there and has never had any trouble.
