I know of an african american pediatrician that is awesome. I will give you details if you are interested. Most of the doctors I know now are all VA.

That does not alter their reality of not seeing a black doctor in Grand Rapids. One of my brothers had a black Doctor in GR, a specialist, and after seeing many doctors prior to his one, he finally got relief for his condition.

There are black doctors in GR....of course, but you are more likely to see black orderlies and food service workers, in hospitals, than you are likely to see black doctors. I don't think anyone is trying to keep black doctors out.....I just don't think black professionals find Grand Rapids very attractive.....of course....you can find some that do....but for the most part.....no.

Since blacks are only about 8% of the population, it would make sense that at least 92% of the doctors are not black.

Agreed! However, its more like 98% of the doctors are not black, which is more nonsensical.

There's a surge in Grand Rapids of doctors being Middle Eastern and Asian, immigrating here. My daughter goes to a pediatric specialist at Spectrum and only one doctor in the practice is native to the U.S.. I actually think there's a lot fewer American born college students choosing to go into studying medicine. It's particularly low in the African American community. Just anecdotal though.

A black doctor here is more likely to be from an African country, it seems.

I know of three. There's a pulmonologist at the former Blodgett hospital.
Then at Mercy Health at the Byron Center/64th location there is Dr. Uchebike Nwankwo who gets great reviews and my own doctor, Dr. Andre Hollingsworth who I am really happy with. Super nice folks.
Both of the last two do both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics
