Default Grand Rapids Breaks Snowfall Record

'Last week, Grand Rapids, Mich., shattered its December-February snowfall record of 85.1 inches set in 1951-52. As of Tuesday afternoon, 90.4 inches had fallen. And though the month doesn't end until Friday, the city has a new February record of 37.1 inches, surpassing 1990's 35.5 inches.'

We've had a heavier than normal winter here with the snow, I'm in mid-Michigan. It's fine, when the weather turns (warmer), makes us appreciate it all the more. I'll still take it over the brownfields (and spring/summer/fall heat) of Arizona.

By the way, shouldn't all this snowfall help the great lakes that have been struggling with water levels?

I heard that Lake Michigan was up 4" during the last month instead of loosing it's typical 2" during Jan/Feb. That has to be a good sign. I hope the levels come back up to normal.

Yep, it's one reason why I'm *leaving* Arizona for GR. I'll take a harsh winter over near perpetual and relentless heat anytime.

From my understanding the snowfall helps but also ice cover ... more of it means less evaporation.

Yes, as a matter of fact they were saying on the news the other night that because a lot of the snow we've gotten has been from moisture systems from the Gulf of Mexico, Canada and the Pacific, that we should see a net gain in water levels this Spring and Summer. If the snow comes from the Great Lakes watershed in the form of just lake effect snow, like normal years, it actually drains water from the lakes and it gets trapped in groundwater and doesn't make it all back to the Great Lakes.

Wow, nerd alert!

Funny thing is is that it's been so dispersed, but continuous. I have only used my snowblower 3 or 4 times this year. It's just been snowing a little bit almost every day for two months straight. I've had more than enough for this winter.
