That place is a trip. All the homeless people out there, there is the Native American guy and I didn't even think about it but when he asked for change one night I said "Sorry, chief" I felt so bad, because I didn't even mean it that way.

Does anybody think Garfield Park is a bad area? I mean in and around it.. Is it fairly safe or infested with gangs?

Did you ever consider apartments in the downtown area? Or did you want a house?

No apartments sorry.. I have a family and cats. We need a bit of room even a small fenced backyard.
I suggested Garfield Park area because I found a lot of homes in that area within my budget.
Are there houses downtown that you think I should know about? Remember safety is pretty much number one priority.

I actually saw some rentals on Lake St. near the post office in East Town.. I don't know TOO much about the area but I actually think its pretty safe. Want me to see if I can get you some more details on it?

Eastown was one of my favorite areas when I visited there.

I couldn't tell you really since I was only there once, and overall Grand Rapids wouldn't be a place I'd really like to live. I guess I'm just a true east side of the state fan...go figure. But I liked how it had a certain grit to it without being too run down. As in grittier than East GR but not like Baxter or anything. I liked the shops in Eastown though, and restaurants looked nice. We went to the Meyer May House in Heritage Hill and the tour guide was going to send us to a place in East Town for dinner, though we didn't want hot dogs. We mentioned we had breakfast at a place in Plainfield Twsp on Plainfield Avenue and both looked puzzled as to where Plainfield Avenue is. It's a pretty major street. I don't know if they never leave their little corner of the city or what....
But I found East Town to seem pretty nice. Someone else here could probably tell you more.

Fairly safe. You might get your share of car break-ins and petty crime, but there is a pretty strong neighborhood organization both in Eastown and in nearby East Hills who look out for each other.
