Default Where to rent in Grand Rapids

My finace and I are looking to live in the Grand Rapids area, ideally on the North end. He is a "country boy" from South Carolina and would prefer to rent a house rather than an apartment. I am not sure where to begin in this process, and we do have some time - he's moving here this coming May or June. Any suggestions you may have would be wonderful. Anywhere within 20 -25 minutes of the East Beltline and I96 is ideal. Thanks!

Any highrise, city atmospheric apartments or condo buildings in downtown? I wouldn't ever move there, just curious.
Perhaps GR isn't that bad, I haven't had pleasant dealings with the conservative nature of the city and residents, but since I am in the process of hanging out with someone that is from that area, I may give it a little bit of a shot. Any suggestions on places to eat, rent, and *gasp* any night clubs?

I don't think GR is a bad city at all, but it depends on the kind of person you are. Don't expect to be moving to NYC, but there's plent of good restauarants for a nice price. What are you looking to pay? You can go to bulls head downtown, which I'd say 15-20 dollar meal. You can go to Leo's seafood which is a bit more expensive. I never really went to any of the night clubs but I guess Moxie and the Crush is popular up there. Its a great place if you are the type of person to live in that kind of city, its clean, safe and has things to do. For me, it wasn't quite enough of an international city for me, and i prefer fast-paced busy cities.

There are a lot more condo projects popping up downtown. Pretty nice I must say. I'm not much of a club person but Night Club Moxie, The Crush at the B.O.B., McFadden's and Monte's are probably the closest to that kind of atmosphere. I prefer places like the Woods and Gardellas.

Colleenanne - I use to live downtown grand rapids in Heritage Hill. I'm not sure if you're still looking but they have a website: www.heritagehillweb.org I loved living there. Beautiful old houses.

All of the above: lofts, new construction, low income, high income, high rise, low rise, mid rise, old house, townhouse, old school (Union Square), old factories. As far as nightclubs, there are a ton. If you like just drinking beer: Founders, McFaddens, Black Rose and HopCat work. If you like wine and martinis: Bar Divani or the Dragon Room. College crowd: Gardella's, Republic, Rockwell, Monte's, O'Tooles, Tap House, McFadden's (again), Grand Woods Lounge, Cambridge House, JD Reardons (in the Boardwalk), Churchill's, Moxies, that piano bar that I can't think of, Flanagan's, Bite, Graydon's Crossing, The BOB, Birch Lodge. Live music: Intersection, Founder's, Billy's in Eastown. Good food: San Chez, 6.1.6. in the JW Marriott, Chop House (pricey), Charley's Crab, Leo's, Tre Cugini, One Trick Pony, anything in the Amway Grand, Louis Benton Steak House, Bloom, XO Asian, A sushi place on Monroe Center that escapes me, Cottage Bar, The Green Well in East Hills, Bistro Bella Vita. Dancing: The BOB and Rags to Riches (yuck), Moxie's. Alternative lifestyle friendly: Pub 43, Diversions, Rumors (including a cross-dressing fashion show), The Apartment. Strip joints: Tini Bikinis, Parkway Tropics and Showgirls.

I know there's a bunch more I've missed.

If you want some ideas of places to rent downtown or near downtown, just send me a direct message. I'd be happy to help out.
