Why don't you start at GVSU? The trick with academic staff positions is to get your foot in the door. People make the mistake of applying for the plum positions, which they almost have no chance of getting since they usually go to someone who already works for the university. Once you're established on campus, you can then keep an eye out for better positions.

well you see.
i'm not starting at GVSU because:
-this year i was SUPPOSED to be going to San Diego, but i missed my entrance deadline. therefore my acceptance rolls over to either next semester or next year....i picked next year.
-GRCC is the school that actually has the same major and courses as the school in San Diego, so when i transfer so will most of my credits.
-GRCC is def. way cheaper.
-If I wanted to stay in Michigan i would've chose a 4 year school in michigan. but my real plans were to move to SD...not stay here.
-So grcc having the same major, being able to tranfer credits, and such is why i didn't chose gvsu.
-also, i already know MANY people from gvsu, so it's not a problem with the social scene or anything i'm completly fine with all of that, i just need to find a job downtown...by school.

Doing what? You haven't mentioned what you're qualified for or looking for. Waiting tables, cashier, accountant, bio-research?

You want a job? Some body just answered your call. Spectrum Health of downtown Grand Rapids is seeking applicants to fill 500, yes you read that right 500 positions. Have a diploma and work ethic, no problem -- entry level positions available. Have a degree in some crazy field I can't pronounce, no problem -- careers available.

Sorry, didn't see anywhere in your first post that you were right out of high school. For a job like what you are looking for, just come over to GR and hit the bricks for a week putting in 20 - 30 applications a day, and I guarantee you will find a job. Bring a tent and camp somewhere if you don't have a place to stay until Fall. I think there's an inexpensive campground in the Jenison area just South of Allendale.
You won't get an entry-level job filling out resumes on careerbuilder.com or some other site. If you want something, go get it.

Make sure you broaden your search to the entire metro-area. You should have no trouble finding low-pay entry level employment.
