Thanks everyone, especially Turtlehearts reassuring words. Some background .. we are retired Navy, so moved multiple times during our 20 years, last duty station was Va Beach, and we bought a home just over the NC border in Currituck. Enjoyed our time in NC, and most of our duty stations were in warmer climates ..Hawaii, San Diego, Charleston, Va Beach. When we retired, we went "home" to Ohio for our family. Now they have all moved to warmer climates, dang it! So we are used to moving, used to warm weather, used to NC, and not used to doing without our granddaughters, lol.
Definitely, be part of their lives! I'd do it and I long for the day I can say I have grandchildren that I want to close to!!
Move! If you pick up a "vibe" from the parents that you are too close for comfort, you can always back off. With a lower cost of living, you will have (I hope) some discretionary income that will allow you to develop your own circle of friends and activities, yet you are nearby. You know, better than young parents do, how quickly a situation can arise that requires some help. They will love having you nearby, but not in their lap! Go for it.
We will be about an hour away .... we are fifteen minutes now. My daughter is happy we will be moving, so she has the best of both worlds .. the only things holding them here was us, lol.
