On Thursday Sen. Joe Lieberman proposed new legislation that would give the government the power to take over & even turn off the internet during a national crisis. Companies that don't comply could be fined.
The bill is supposed to help protect us "from new kinds of enemies: cyberwarriors, cyberspies, cyberterrorists and cybercriminals." Lieberman wants to create the "National Center for Cybersecurity and Communications within the Department of Homeland Security", which could require certain companies (the article doesn't say which ones) to share their information with the government.
So, are you for or against such and measure and why?
I am against it under the premise of "enough already!" This is supposed to be a free country. This just puts the icing on the cake of what I see as a severe case of "worrywartitis" and cowardice.
How can we complain about "nannyism" when we allow anyone to take over a means of communication under the premise of "safety?"
To quote good ole Ben Franklin:
"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
CMS is more or less a watchdog for medicare and medicaid. This organization develops the conditions for participation and conditions for coverage for health care providers. I believe it also is going to play a large part in health care reform. CMS is not a private company who does something that the government used to do. Can you give a citation on that?

There are many medicare HMO plans now. Having to deal with insurance verification, I find that each day brings new ones. There are also plans that basically facilitate the whole claims process as well.

Australia is under the menace right now of also getting the internet blocked, due to child porn terrorism, or whatever. (It's in a thread in the Australian forums). This country's government and others are starting to try to get control of the internet since it is a power play. Some people said before he was elected , that Obama is a socialist, and if he passes this bill, well I'll believe it. No, the government has no right to block information. This is why we have the freedom of speech bill. But nevertheless, the government does whatever it wants. When was the last time the citizens were able to stop the government from passing a bill they (government) wanted passed? If they really want it, they'll get it.
I am outraged and offended that this was even thought of. I think he should be kicked out of office. WE DECIDE WHAT THEY HAVE ACCESS TO not the otherway around. I don't care what the circumstances WE SHOULD NOT let them shut down any source of information especially our main source, the internet.

Reloop, yes I am aware of HMO's and PPO's, however; this particular entity is part of the government program of Medicare and Medicaid.
