The South prides itself on its unique "culture", but you also have to ask, what sort of culture creates those kinds of things?

This from the state that spawned widespread use of drugs,"free love",and is infamous to this day as the state that welcomed many vietnam veterans home by spitting on them and harrassing them with demonstrations at the airports when they arrived, with chants of "baby-killers"???
I will take some bible thumpers over that mess anyday..........

Speaking of "Cali haters from the South"....! Let me guess, and probably from one of those "sophisticated cultural meccas" like, say, MO...?!
Which BTW, is basically "Southern" (and "hillbilly" as in the "Ozarks"), having been settled by so many migrants from the hemp and tobacco districts like Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee. And especially when it has a whole part of the state specifically known as " Little Dixie".... yee-hah, y'all!

Prejudice toward the South
For the most part this is exhibited only by the ignorant. As is the case with most varieties of bigotry.

Oh that's right, Limbaugh's from Missouri, isn't he...?! And born in Southeast MO actually (probably the most "Southern" part, where numerous Civil War battles and skirmishes were fought).... another great contributor to American culture, bless his little heart!

And your point would be.......what?
Walter Cronkite was also from Missouri, as was Edwin Hubble, just to name a couple of luminaries.
But, I understand you have to feel superior to somebody......too bad you dont know enough to know of whence you speak.
Bless your heart, sweetpea!
Stop hijacking the thread, if you wanna bash Missouri, please allow me to invite you to the Missouri forum.
But you wont show up........

I think blaming Southerners today for the Civil War is silly. Northerners were just as racist at the time, even if the northern states had abolished slavery.

You are so right. And guess who owned the ships that brought the slaves to America. Not the Southerners! Southerners were plantation owners and farmers. The ships that brought the slaves, who treated the slaves so badly were the Northerners. Not all slave owners were mean to their slaves. That is an "Uncle Tom's Cabin" myth. Slaves had the choice to leave America when the Civil War was over. Give you three guesses why they didn't. Some slave owners and slaves cared for each other. Many of the slaves were better off here than they were where they came from. Their fellow countrymen sold them to the Northern slave ships that brought them over here.

Well, all these defensive replies from the "southern folk" just serves to illustrate why the South gets "dissed" so frequently. Sure, everybody has their faults, but the South always seems to react to any mention of theirs (and rather substantial ones too, like Slavery & Segregation), with this colossal "chip on their shoulder", along with a bunch of self-pitying excuses ("it's all the fault of the North, elites, Liberals, California!", etc., etc.). Heck, this country fought a Civil War over many of these very differences, and yet to hear the way a lot of Southerners talk even today, it's like "the South will rise again"!

When it comes to education, even though Birmingham, AL has horrible results, it does not account for the schools that excel. The city and county schools are not so great, but then some of the schools in Hoover, Vestavia, Mountain Brook, etc., are among some of the best in the nation. University-wise, UAB is one of the best universities for medicine and engineering in the US, and has an amazing teaching hospital. We have people from Japan, India, Africa, and China, to name a few, as well as from all over the US here to learn and work here, and UAB university and hospital research is miles above other more prominent universities in the fields of cancer and HIV studies to name a couple, and Auburn University has set the bar for green technology research with their programs. We are not all "simple folk", and just because we don't have 14 coffee shops per square block does not mean we are all "anti-intellectual", oh great pompous, smug, manbearpigs of the world.
