because if someone sees a trashy white person, they think THAT PERSON individually is trashy. If someone sees a ghetto black person, they think, oh, there's a typical black person. Whites don't get lumped in together as much.

Why? Why are Black people getting lumped together as one? Last time I checked, Black people don't control the media in the USA, as a whole at least.

You're funny Violet...at least you're headed in the right direction. These are for you:
-Denial-Privilege and Life as a Majority (written by a White guy)

-Whiteness After 9-11 (Written by a Black guy)

-White Privilege Shapes USA (Written by a White guy)

-When Do Whites Support Equality for Blacks (This is pretty important here and was talked about already)

Thing is, I see some of the White brothas & sistas act incredulous on here about this situation and act as if Blacks only went through slavery and a some discrimination but that's all gone...stop thinking about that (nevermind the fact that there are lots of Blacks alive who are between the ages of 40-80 who as well as Whites, figure that out).

Black men are like 6 percent of the US population (correct me if I'm wrong) and White women are like a couple of times larger than that...so why is it that this small group is portrayed as terrorizing toward the much larger group...man, I screwed that up, this video can explain it better:

I'm sympathetic to the plights of decent black people who don't perpetuate the stereotype, but change in public perception is going to be slow (if not non-existant) as long as there are others who keep perpetuating the negativity. That's not white folks' fault; stereotyping is human nature. All humans do it.
There are a gazillion different stereotypes. Many people think that anyone from the Missouri Ozarks is inbred, toothless white-trash. And, in many cases they would be right. I agree that you need to judge people individually by their merits, but there are only so many hours in the day, and nobody is going to live long enough to meet all 6+ billion people on this earth.

So, we do the next best thing. We pre-judge people based upon our own and others' experiences. If people did not behave in certain ways, then these stereotypes WOULD NOT EXIST. I agree that decent black people are negatively affected by the bad behavior of others of their race. This is unfortunate. All the more reason why black America should strive to eradicate the people who are perpetuating these negative stereotypes. Instead they promote them as icons in the media and then complain because people think that black people are gangsta rapper types who wear funny clothes and are functionally illiterate.

You can't have it both ways!

The problem is... is that the blacks in the media spotlight, especially the musicians, do give credence to the bad black stereotypes. It would help greatly if the black community would stop supporting those black celebrities who act ghetto or gangsta tough. Stop buying and listening to their music. Stop talking like them and thinking them cool.

Before anyone start blasting me for 'whining' or some stupid ish, know that I'm good. My mother grew up living in FLA for half the year and NY state for the other 6 months and my father grew up in the real Queen City, both of them were okay. Me, I'm originally from the Cascade Heights area of ATL (still know a lot of folks from that area) but that doesn't mean that I don't see things.

-Becoming Black in America
-Blacks and the Dilemma of Patriotism
-Institutional Practices and the African American Boy

The above are nothing new for Blacks. I've even known of dudes from the islands who came over here to make an honest living and were basically given a hard time by the law because of what they were driving...I've also had people close to me who were treated worse than average by cops (we're all middle class and still face this and we are law abiding).

We've already established slavery. This goes to you Miu, there's no way that you can honestly and seriously tell me that Asians went through a rougher time in this country compared to Black Americans.

Violett, the biggest mistake for Blacks to make is trying to be 'American', to get caught up with being equal (in my opinion) and taking it all to heart. The crazy thing is that a lot of Whites will look at you funny if you don't conform (live the American dream) and you'll be alienated. I really feel that some of the Whites on here don't want to seize what's being brought out to them (even though they're perfectly capable of doing so).

I can sit here and admit that some Black people act like straight ignorant morons but, like what's being argued, why is that being pushed as some type of reflection of my character? Why do most of you dudes get to refract the image of the serial killer, the clinically insane person who kills from time to time (isn't that something inherent?), the child porn loving person, etc...Sure, there are Black folks who would be quick to put a bullet in you head for no reason or (or some other crime) but what about that former Klan member who mindlessly murdered Blacks back in the day who got off for that? What about Vick (with the clean record) being punished like he ran up on the President or something but Roethlisberger getting off (compare him to Kobe too)...what about Chris Brown doing a wrong (and that was wrong) and having the majority speak like his name was Chris "Adolf" Hitler-Brown but then it's "But, but, he's Charlie Sheen, he likes to party." See what I'm saying, the true fact is that White people in this country live by a different set of rules than Blacks and it's always been like that...there are vastly more mines in my field so the metal detector's more thorough than the majority group's. Honest people know this though.

But the thing some people aren't paying attention to is that the decent Black people are not getting the attention. People like Cornell West, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Tavis Smiley, Michael Eric Dyson. These persons are the persons who buck the trend, who going against the stereotype. If going against the stereotype is suppose to be rare, then it should be more valuable to put persons such as the aforementioned persons. Unfortunately, this isn't always the case. The bad stereotypes get the most attention from everyone.

And not everyone in the Black community is supporting these stereotypes. I don't celebrate the celebrities who act "ghetto". I go for the Black celebrities who show a dignified portrayal of African-Americans. I can only do for myself. I don't have the money at this point to start my own shows or do my own thing. All I can do with what I have is to take responsibility for myself. How can I stop others from acting "ghetto" or from supporting those who act "ghetto"? I didn't watch any of the Tyler Perry films. I never bought the tickets for them. I find the movies rather stupid. Unfortunately, there are millions of people,White people too, who did watch Tyler Perry movies. And one thing to know is that Tyler Perry rarely funds his own films. Lions Gate funds him, which is not Black-owned.

I would also argue that the stereotypes in the media, it is alot older than hip-hop. Step and fetch, Blackface, minstrels. Historically, White audiences have liked this alot, in the era where there were hardly any images of Black people portrayed as human beings or decent.

it's the pics of Rihanna that did in Chris Brown. those bruises and that facial swelling was something else.

And it's not all bad. Michael Jackson probably molested those kids, but he never was put in jail or fully on trial. OJ killed his wife (come on, we all know that if he didn't do it, he at least had a part in it), and got off scot free. It's more about how famous and how much of an icon you are and less about the color of your skin.

Regarding the other stuff, it's all about percentages, imo. White serial killers and kiddie porn lovers make-up like 3% of the white population total, but I would say "ghetto" blacks make up at least 33% of the black population. Simply put, there are more "ghetto" black people than there are white serial killers and child porn addicts.

But it's still only a minority of the the population. What about the rest of the population?

I think it's because, as you alluded to in an earlier post, a lot of white people don't know regular, middle-class, normal black families.

They DO exist (as you are aware) but white people who don't interact on a daily basis with normal black people--and there are still a lot of white people in that situation--tend to lean toward the images that we get on the news.

I work with tons of black people and have for years because I work in a major city. They are not superstars, but educated black people with jobs and homes and children and involvement in their communities. Where I live now, my next door neighbors are black. He's a mailman, she works in an office. They don't make the news because they are normal, unremarkable people, and there are others like them in my neighborhood.

However, in the town where I come from originally, there are only a very few black people in town. Many white people honestly just don't know any regular black people. Most are not racists, either, or at least don't want to be and don't consider themselves so, but if you don't actually personally know any other people of a certain race, and the only time you do see them is either on TV being lead around in handcuffs or winning Grammy awards and Heisman trophies, the ideas get into your subconscious whether you want them there or not.
