Eh, got a friend who smokes like a chimney when he drives and while he hasn't crashed (yet), that is a good point. He has a ghetto-ass 'ashtray' (an empty can/bottle of the last beverage he had) that he disposes his smokes in, so no chance of anything catching fire but still.

LOL, I use a nearly-empty water bottle to put out my cigs in the car, too. I like your term "ghetto-ass ashtray".

When I use to smoke, I lit my cigarette at the red lights and had an ashtray on the dashboard right in front of my right hand. If on an expressway you could push in your cigarette lighter and never have to take your eyes off of the road.
While in traffic nowadays, everytime somebody does something stupid they are usually on their cellphone and I am in traffic from 2 to 3 hours 5 days a week. If my phone rings while I am driving, I do not even answer it because it is dangerous and there is no way that anybody could say that it is not.
To go on "rants" about the dangers of a puff of smoke on a sidewalk is so rude when their are real dangers that could kill your family that should be erased before you go off on some taxpayer smoking on a sidewalk that you could very easily walk around or how about if you just hold your breath until you get by? Very easy solution since the tax on that cigarette surely helped to pay for the sidewalk.
Go after the YAKKER so your children can come home tonight.
End of story.

I agree that the side walk issue is really a non-issue most of the time; outside getting the smell on other peoples clothes. But, your cell phone comparison is ridiculous since, again, smokers both smoke and talk on the cell while they are driving. Further, we all damn well know that smokers drop their cigs while driving from time to time. To deny this would be a flat out lie. And the fact delusional denials are a requirement for many of these cockamamie arguments is telling on its own.

I'm always extra careful when I'm driving and only pour my wine when I'm at a light.

So if a smoker drops his cigarette once in 10 years, that is no comparison to a person looking down to press buttons on a cellphone throughout their day and I still do not see how it would be possible to drive, hold a cigarette and hold a cellphone at the same time.
The sidewalk issue in no way compares to the real dangers so it is not a modest proposal.
How about a modest proposal to put your phone in the trunk so other people can get to where they are going alive and quit worrying about smoke on a sidewalk that is not going to kill anybody?
I'm done with this.

This thread is about smoking on sidewalks. You are clearly very incensed about people who use cell phones while dirving. Well guess what - I don't support this either! If this is a topic that interests you so much, however, may I respectfully suggest you open a new thread - I may even contirbute
You have a posting history in this thread of changing the topic when you get called on one of your posts. For example, you ignored my request for your grounds for this assertion:

They would go into the same catagory with the ones who believe the sidewalks are theirs only.

Instead, when pressed for more details, you offer a parade of diversions onto unrelated topics:

Now they are pushing chocolate and everybody is so excited to be able to eat it with no guilt.

Dodging requests for further insight into your undocumented assertions and the constant changing of topics weakens the strength of any arguments you have on the topic of this thread.

In many states it's illegal to use your cell while driving. Maybe that concept is too difficult to grasp. I don't know. I know in Jersey it's illegal. I also saw a few proposals to have it illegal to smoke and drive. You folk should neither talk on your cell, look for your lighter/cigs, or eat while you're driving. How about that? I don't see the rational of promoting one over the other. It's nonsense.
