The school is doing you a favor actually.
It’s not called volunteering, it’s conscription. I caught wind of this because my friend’s kid is mandated by her school to volunteer. That’s a bit odd… Mandatory volunteering… Am I the only one that doesn’t understand this concept? I like the idea of people being able to freely volunteer. Making people do something against their will is rarely a good thing. I usually builds resentments and loathing.

Yes, it probably shouldn't be called volunteering if it's forced on kids. And Yes, the parents should be the ones to instill these types of morals into their kids .... but the truth of the matter is that most parents will let it slip off of their "list of things to do." So, if the schools can help steer a few kids towards having an iota of compassion for others, then it's probably a good thing.

I'm in Maryland, where it's been going on for years. I've seen the kids rushing to cram in the requirement at the last second, by doing menial tasks like making xerox copies. However, I've also seen the kids that take it to heart, enjoy the experience, and really get something out of it.

It's like anything else in life. You get out of it ... what you put into it.

I agree 100% and how do they get away with it? Because of the group think police state mindset we've been living under for a generation....the same socialist police state thinking that has brought a once great nation to its knees during that same period.

This kind of thought preemption is killing us....and quickly.

Good question Alanboy....nobodys answered yet...church activites shouldn't count because they are NOT community service.

Mandatory volunteering is actually a wonderful part of high school that all students benefit from, no matter how much they may complain. It teaches them to take the initiative to find a volunteer position and then to manage their schedules to fit in time each week. It develops dedication to a task, as well as responsibility. It coaches a friendly attitude and better interactions with others.

Although many students may not realize it, volunteering is the start of the development of life skills that will be needed not only in the workplace but in life. It gets many students out of their houses, off computers, away from televisions, and into the real world where not only are they helping others and they are learning new things.

By giving students that little extra push to volunteer, mandatory volunteering creates a world of good. It provides students with needed life skills, fills the void in volunteering programs, and allows students to discover the joys of volunteering that most would not realize.

MANDATORY volunteering teaches our children that their excess time must be spent participating in a school program to gain extra points....thats all....I think children learn by example.....if you bring them up to have compassion and to help others...there's is no "mandating" needed.School programs are NOT needed for a student or child to discover the joys of FREELY volunteering their time to others....when they are mandated..they lose the free will, and it becomes just another chore imposed upon them to satisfy what some-one else self rightiously deems as necessary.

The mindset that insists on mandatory volunteering is a growing cancer upon our once free society. It is very PC and demanded of progressive socialists as it is the tool by which the masses are prevented from ever having an original thought of their own.

And that is exactly what we have in today's high school graduating class. A sea of automatons whose every activity has been carefully planned, scheduled, and controlled 24/7 for the entire lives. They've had no time, and much less freedom to reflect upon what's going on in the world around them and form their own opinions about it because they've been told exactly what to do and what to think about every last little thing....and most especially when it comes to social issues.

Your post is articulate and well written and describes exactly what is wrong with America today. Describes exactly why we have a populace of zombies who think nothing, question nothing, and obediently follow their maze each day like dutiful little rats.

I think the teachers in the schools with mandatory(volunteering) should set an example to the students by volunteering (mandated if necessary) 80 hours of free instruction to their students as a show of good faith...to let them know that they really DO care about their education.

They do, it's called staying after school for "extra help".

i was not a teacher nor would have ever chosen to be, but my husband taught in public schools for over thirty years. my comments are based on the many years i was witness to the demands of his job as well as the teaching profession as it affected close friends of ours who taught.

teachers who are conscientious, serious about their work , committment to students, and their profession, are already "volunteering" (unpaid time ) 80 hours and more. it has always come with the teaching territory ; and time before and after the school day-working one on one with a child on a concept they don't understand, spending time with a child who has a problem with other classmates or a problem at home, working with student groups on extra curricular projects, etc.- all of these activities comprise teacher time spent before school begins or after the school day ends for which they are not paid. for good teachers, their day does not stop when school is dismissed, nor does it stop once they are at home. there are always papers to grade, lessons to plan, and phone calls to parents about student progress or lack of it to make. those people who still believe teachers work only from 8-3 or what ever the school day is, have no concept of the demands placed on teachers today. so don't propose adding "volunteer time" to their schedule. i realize not all teachers are conscientious, but for the majority who are, they don't need formal volunteering as a part of their day. for most of them, volunteering outside of school hours is something they are already doing as a part of being a teacher.
