The following question was posted in another thread and it got me thinking. Why does the US still use the English imperial system and should we change to metric?
...Snip...
Measurement in the USA, now this is head scratching because the US uses the old British Imperial system of miles gallons inches etc etc etc.
But, it means that any apprentice in the metal trades needs to learn the metric system as well.
I cannot see why the USA does not want to move to a simpler system which the Metric system is.
Good question. I live in Canada with American parents so I'm totally confused half the time, understanding intuitively some measurements in the Imperial form and others in the metric. But I do think that the metric system makes more sense intuitively, is easier to understand and learn, and should be adopted by the US.

It is a matter of custom. The U.S. did try go into the metric system but it did not work. People simply did not care to accept it. If I am correct it was also very costly out there in industry to force chage on all the existing equipment into a metric system.
We do use it to produce items but to force people to use it, why? Because someone does not like it? We seem to produce results in our daily lives with what we have. Take care.

Not only because someone does not like it, but it's usually someone from outside our country that doesn't like it.
actually the US doesn't use the imperial measurement system. The US has a 16oz liquid gallon whereas an Imperial gallon is 20oz.
16 oz = pint (2 cups or 1/2 quart)
128 oz = gallon (4 quarts, or 8 pints) weighs about 8 pounds
