all of those pics are from these boards (except the Missouri ones), and it's only a few states. its not just natural beauty - we have icons like the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, and a HOST of others i can't even begin to list off... our cities are varied and our culture is as well. i highly suggest you take a road trip and explore, or even read up on each of the states and see what each has to offer. perhaps once you start looking at the states as more like countries unto themselves you'll see just how much the US has to offer. there's a LOT of beauty here... one only has to find it .
Wikipedia has us second only to France for international tourism numbers (59.75 million visitors in 2010). Perhaps you hear more about Americans travelling to other countries because they see it as more of a special event than inter-state tourism? i mean, did you know the St. Louis Gateway Arch has about 4 million visitors per year?
The scenery in the US is bland and boring? You need to forget about traveling the world for a little while, and take a trip past your own backyard here in the US. We have so much stunning scenery it would be a challenge to see it all in one's lifetime. Take some time to look at the picture threads on any of the US forums.
I think some of you guys are being a little harsh on the OP, but I do agree with what you're saying. If you live in a fairly generic town and have never had a chance to leave the US, it's pretty easy to start feeling like there's not much to see here besides parking lots and big-box stores. It's easy to forget about the geographical diversity, the wide variety of cities and people that make up the country. When your routine drive to work every day has views like this:
It's pretty easy to get discouraged. And while I definitely encourage the OP to travel west in the US, even doing that he'll come across a LOT of generic towns that are pretty boring. But they won't all be boring, and the terrain is incredible. I mean, seriously incredible. You can see pictures all your life but when you see it first hand it's an entirely different experience. Another thing I encourage you to do is to use Google Maps' street view to explore other countries around the world. Just go to, say, France, and randomly click on a spot near a city. Sometimes you'll find really cool scenes, but a lot of times you'll just wind up looking at something as bland as anything here. It's actually kind of depressing at first but it shows you that no place is 100% unique beauty.
Well, I have traveled to 24 out of 50 States, road trip style. Almost entirely east of the Mississippi river. Also been to Texas and arizona.
And you still think that compared to other countries, THIS one is bland and boring?
Even in those 24 states, there's more diversity here than several other nations. Have you even been outside the country?
