If you have a conscript army you will still save billions in military costs and that is even taking into consideration those who will enlist for a slightly higher salary. Right now we have a system of mercenaries when it comes to costs. We are also using highly paid mercenaries like Blackwater. With conscripts you will still save.

1960
Average civilian wage, no college education, about $4000 plus dollars a year
E-1 pay in the military $960 a year.

2012
Average civilian wage, no college education about $28000 a year
E-1 pay $18000 per year.

Just doing the math shows you the savings. As far a actual job evaluation the professional army has done just about the same job as the conscript army has done.

and we would be speaking Japaneese.

We downsized so far after WWI that our military was very weak when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.

Very few women wish to be treated as men - and not one that I have spoken to wishes to fight on the front lines. But I do think they are due some respect. In WWII women worked in the factories on the home-front building weapons and ammunition for the men fighting the war. Women flew fighters from the factories to the staging areas before the planes were sent to the war zones. Women have ALWAYS held an important and difficult role in fighting wars - whether at home or in actual battle. With or without the inclusion of women in Selective Service don't worry - they'll carry their weight and a bit more.

LOL - I'm a male but that just struck a nerve.

Since women are now allowed to serve on the front lines of the military than wouldn't it be discriminatory to not include them in a draft like men are?

Tours of duty should be un-accompanied, ie, single soldiers, so we don't have to fund the huge support structures for families such as schools, off base housing, dependent medical care and all that. Our military will be much smaller in the future, marriage is a fading institution anyway, and there will presumably be several hundred thousand single males that will be willing to serve our country in those circumstances. If there are not enough volunteers, reintroduce the draft excluding females. Women should not serve in the military. This will save hundreds of billions of dollars.

Excuse me ppl WAR isn't some kind of game you play. What happened to family values? Funny they preach fmaily values but don't mind unwilling parties getting their heads blown off and taken away from thier families. Yes it is indentured servitude and was unconstitional from the beginning. .

If we continue in the direction of drone and other automated forms of warfare, I don't think a draft will get much traction.
