Congressman Rangel will be introducing legislation to reinstate the draft and include women for the first time.
He believes that by including women... "Reinstating the draft and requiring women to register for the Selective Service would compel the American public to have a stake in the wars we fight as a nation. We must question why and how we go to war, and who decides to send our men and women into harm's way."

What do you think.... for or against the idea?

Now that women can fight on the front lines they should be required to have to register for selective service jsut like the guys do when they turn 18. If there ever was a need to draft then the many of the women would fail the requirements and today many of the men would as well.
I would like to see military service be a requirement. I think it would knock some sense into the youth of today many of whom are floundering even with a college degree and many more since they believe that "FAME' will come knocking and they will live happily ever after.
Trouble with the Government today is there are way too many people with law degees and not enough with a military experience. Too many consider themselves "elite"

You bet. If it's not a military draft it should be 2 years of some kind of service with a military style basic training. Strong discipline builds character that too many people today lack. And don't give me that crap about indentured servitude. If you don't like living in one of the most advanced countries in the world well, the door swings both ways. Try someplace else and see if it fits you better.

Reinstate the draft? When they're downsizing the military? I DO think women should have to register with Selective Service. If they want to be men, let them be treated like one.

The draft will actually help in bringing down the cost. Professional soldiers are more similar to mercenaries and they cost lots of money. So far the results of all that money have not really been satisfactory for the investment. The last war we actually win and the best showing of American forces was WWII and that was a conscripted army. What we would have is a National Guard type of force that could be used domestically but with a wider scope than the NG. We could even engineer a program where they would not be directly asscosiated with DOD and then could be used to supplement the USBP, for example. There are a lot of ways to train and use a conscripted force that will save money from the system we are presently using.

The only people who should be drafted into wars are the politicians who cause them!

The head of the Selective Service was interviewed on the radio awhile back.

He stated he doubts the draft ever will be needed, but IF it is it will NOT be like Vietnam.

No deferments except medical, he said.

Also , they would draft based on age and take each month only what is needed.

EXAMPLE--------If the are drafting all 19 year 6 months...............if they needed 70% of them In February, the 30% who didn't get inducted are now DONE and would not have to woryy about being inducted a few months/years later.

I liked the part of----------NO NON-MEDICAL DEFERMENTS

he head of SS is a politician. He'll say that today and tomorrow he'll go the other way. It's happened before and it will happen again. Good idea no non-medical deferments.

My main reason for backing a draft is not to send young people to fight foreign wars but to stop the one that is going on in our streets right now.

ide bar: If we are going to have 300 million guns in our country at least we should teach people how to use them amd the military is a lot more reliable teacher than some privately owned shooting gallery in Indiana or whereever.
