It is getting to be like the boy who cried wolf which is undermining the perception that our elected actually know what they are doing.
They talk about all the cuts to basic services that will happen all the while we are still giving HUGE piles of money to countries that don't care about us. last year Hillary Clinton came out to say that we will be cutting aid to Pakistan by 1/3 which amounted to 800 million dollars!! I was shocked when I heard that. On NPR the other day Dianne Remes was talking with experts about this aid to foreign countries and cutting it but the "expert" said it wold barely be a ripple since foreign aid is only 1% of the budget?? What kind of numbers are we actually talking about if almost a billion is a fraction of 1% ???
We need to get this ridiculous spending under control and every member of the government needs to put this country and its' future #1 and get the job done despite the petty squabling of who will get the votes in 2016.

1) First, they don't care - and for the vast majority of them, it is not their genuine mindset BECAUSE as our electoral process currently operates, you need LARGE Amount$ of money to win. Often in multiples of 10 to hundreds of times what they actually pay ($174,000 to $400,000) so the first roadblock is that those contributing the money toward the election of their favorite puppet of the day look for the following traits: those already compromised or those most easily compromised in some way to enable their DONORS to have control over them a la the proverbial Sword of Damocles.

2) Because of this politicians (even those with some of the best intent) become pawns and proxy's for the REAL "OWNERS". Thus, politicians priorities are aligned as follows: a) Ensure support of DONOR$ Intere$t$, b) Self reelection / electability, c) large voting blocs of (generally) single issue flashpoint controlled voters to meet large thresholds and lastly d) what is best for the country and its people.

3) The politicians don't have an answer - especially one that is palatable to both their "OWNERS" AND constituents! This tension needs to be decoupled with extreme prejudice.

[Thus the purchase of over 1.6 billion rounds of ammo (mostly hollow points, so these aren't for target practice) under the Homeland Battlefield Bill for various government agencies from Social Security Admin to DHS. 9300 bulletproof checkpoint booths were also part of the purchase....welcome to 'Checkpoint Charlie' Amerika.]

If this was a different culture and day and age, probably 500 of the 535 and countless others inside the beltway should all fall on their proverbial swords right now for the crimes they have either committed or allowed via legislation - or neglect.

Watch that 1949 Classic, All The President's Men, written by Robert Penn Warren. Things haven't changed much they've just amplified the corruption all around due to the need to maintain a command control over the failing petrodollar consumption driven business - economic - financial model predicated on Fractional Reserve Lending, and driving velocity via a consumption driven model which overtime camouflages the accruing flow of capital back to the owners / and the politicians.

Think about what has happened with many of the so called safety net social programs - they are unsustainable because they are basically a giant PONZI scheme. And the politicians and owners have raided the cookie jar so long and told everyone things were fine so many times the *** is really up but no one wants to say it. Most large banks are insolvent IF they had to report 'mark to market' values of the assets they hold on their books, BUT they are allowed to engage in FRAUD. The system is like a hot potato being passed around of a bad game of musical chairs where now the chair legs are all termite ridden and the hot potato is a grenade - sooner of later the pin is going to fall out or be pulled. Beware!

Other countries would love to dump the petrodollar as world currency and have made more overtures in recent years see India - Iran, Iran - China etc.... Unfortunately, they are holding a lot of this funny' money also, so everyone is playing that 'currency war' game of devaluing to keep their respective sputtering economies treading water.

Solution to Hyper Partisanship = Hyper Citizenship

You earn the right to vote by serving your country
Those who serve in a choice of three areas (military, social/medical services, technical/engineering services) for two years can vote
Those who serve in the capacity to fight for defense of the country determine when to go to war.
No fighting to control resources for financial speculators in foreign lands - they can go themselves if it was such a good idea.

Ban ALL lobbying and ALL political advertising and mandate for some alloted time before elections that those (thoroughly vetted) candidates have a fixed amount of time to spell out what they would do and how it benefits the country on C-Span, PBS and NPR. This would be like a month long 24/7 civics lesson on self government under a constitutional republic. All candidates answer questions while under sodium pentathol on national broadcast.

That's just a start.

Tell your voters what they want to hear, keep your head down and keep accepting large sums of money from special interest groups.

That's the only way to keep getting re-elected. Power hungry, ego trippers are just about the only people who enter politics, getting re-elected is all they care about.

If your US Representative got your vote last November, are you now disappointed in their stance ?

Most of you are hypocrites !

My US Representive got my vote in November, has opposite views from Obama on most issues, and I am proud of them and will vote for them again in 2014 !

There are a number of reasons for the gridlock and atmosphere of non-cooperation in Washington, D.C.

The first thing John Q. Public has to get through his head is that He/She is part of the problem. Programs like Social Security and Medicare take up huge portions of the federal budget. The public has always resisted doing things that would put these programs on a sound fiscal footing. We can't simply have an unlimited budget to pay for the medical care for the elderly. Its time to ration care based on whether treatments are actually effective and prolong life, or whether they are some unjustified windfall for the pharmaceutical industry. With respect to social security, its time to look at increasing the age and which we will eligible for it. Life expectancy has increased substantially since the program was adopted in the 1930's. Its unrealistic to think you can just leave it alone and there will be no problems.

Some politicians realize this. The problems is that these solutions are a "hard sell" to a public that has become increasingly demanding and divorced from reality.

There is an increasingly polarization in this country. The same states that voted for Obama in 2008, were the same states that voted for him in 2012, except that North Carolina and Indiana switched sides. Ideally, politicians from the left and right would get together and simply compromise their differences. However, sequester is more likely than compromise this time.

Lets put it this way! There have been only 2 balanced budgets since I was born and one was under LBJ in 1969 and the other was under Clinton in 2000! Both Democrats! Reagan spent us into oblivion trying to compete with the Russians regarding warfare.

PS: Sorry but people paid into SS and expect it when they retire! Cut Defense spending to the bare bones! Why do we need Military bases in Germany or Japan? They couldn't even stop some rag head Bin Laden!

EXCELLENT post! First on SS, along with your point towards the right wingers out there- cutting it would do no good- people don't realize that is a separate fund, the money paid out for SS is not in the regular budget, it is a separate fund paid into by the SS taxes and paid out separately from that fund. The government has raided it at times to pay for other things, but strictly by the books it is on its own, and cutting it completely technically doesn't even make a dollar of difference in our deficit. So people on the right that keep complaining about SS need to realize that and look elsewhere!

And yes, I'm sorry but defense is so overly bloated, I get so sick and tired of right wing congressmen screaming that we can't cut anything from the military, that there are other better places to look at cuts (yeah, such as the TSA, air traffic controllers, education, highway funds, etc.) Come on, that is ridiculous- they need to realize that maintaining a worldwide military empire is ridiculous, wasteful, and extremely expensive. We don't need any of those bases all around the world, to truly have a military for DEFENSE does not require all of this. We need to stop playing world police and realize that by not doing this, we can save trillions. Why sacrifice pretty much everything in our nation just so we can continue being the world police?
Think about the bloat- the costs of maintaining all of those bases, all of that equipment, all of the people in those locations. Paying free medical care for life for all of those people and their families, paying pensions for all of them once they retire, etc. Gee, can't anyone else see how bloated and wasteful that budget is?

Its really quite simple. We are like children who know how to play our parents. We go to Democrats when we want money spent on us, and we go to Republicans when we don't want to pay any taxes. Both parents want your love, so they do what you want them to do. Then we have gridlock when there is no more money to spend, and we can't get anymore then we already take in.

I can see by the way this whole budget thing is going that the aim of both parties, like their forerunners, is to attack SS so they can bleed the fund some more. If it keeps up they will bleed it to death and you younger folks will have no safety net in the future. The politicians will tell you they have a right to use SS for other things but that is an outright lie. You are paying into that system for the purpose of your future. It is just like any other retirement fund. It is not revenue of any sort. They should be imprisoned for embezzelment when they make that money grab from SS and Medicare.

Yeah, we should give all that money away to the lazy masses that do nothing to earn it.
