Since the bloody collpse of the most-organized and most-vicuious forms of totalitarianism in 1945, and the (thankfully!) near bloodless collapse of its oposite number, institutionalized Marxism, most of the world (Islamic fundamentalim being the most prominent exception) has witnessed a rise in the options and expectation of the responsible individiual. Furthermore, the expansion od these freedoms can be closely linked to technological advances centered around four devices -- each subject to individual, rather than collecive control. These rights/freedoms, and their embodiment are:

mobility -- as manifested in the private vehicle
information -- as manifested in the personal computer and internet access
communication -- as manifiested in the cellular telephone

and self-defense, as embodied in a firearm in private possesion.

I want to emphasize at the outset that I recognize that there is no such thing as absolute freedom -- that the devices cited above do create a severe potential for abuse in the hands of the irrational and the incompetent. Also, that none are immune from some forms of ragulation and possible suppression; and it's usually the power-hungry who are first to call or controls. But as was demomstrated to the sorrow of millions in the years 1914-1945, the potential for such tragedies is componded many times over when harnessed to the monopoly on coercion ceded to the state.

Nor is this observation definable in the classic terms of "left" and "right"; extreme moralists and some of those on the fringes of organized religion seem as determined as anyone else to interfere with, or over-regulate the four avenues of autonomy/individuality cited above, and within the past few years, this unsettling trend has been extended to the simple act of earning a living, as embodied in the "Orwellian workplace".

But I would remind all uf us that the supposed "control" of these trends by extending power and authority to supposedly globally-focused organizations is the first step in setting the stage for a new round of totalitarianism.
