I don't believe it is. People will still use the N-word in its original purpose. Though I've never seen a white person called a thug even if that person deserved it.
WHat is disturbing about the original post is . . . why do black folks think that white people NEED a substitute for the N word?
Think about it.
It is as though some folks just can't take that mantle of victimhood off themselves. They can't accept that everyone in the universe isn't sitting around thinking about ways to put down black folks.
Where I live -- in a city that is nearly equally divided b/n whites and other minorities . . . thug refers to anyone who is engaging in criminal behavior. It has nothing to do with race.
Now, if black folks are determined to find a word to substitute for the N word (which, btw, will get you shunned by other white folks if you utter the No No word around them) . . . I guess "thug" is as good a candidate as any. But I gotta wonder . . . why this need to continually find yet another way to indict white people?
Sometimes, a word is just a word - and doesn't have any other connotation or secret coded meaning.
thug refers to behavior-- usually criminal certainly lawless. nowhere has it any race connotations.
you have chosen to call those who do thug things other names and attributed the misdeed to us.
Whomever wants to take "offense" to being called a thug, shirks personal responsibility for their actions when they act like a thug. No one has a right NOT to be offended by a word, especially that "thug" acting football player screaming like an insane lunatic. He probably offended that poor woman who was reporting on the game, PLENTY. I don't hear her crying. She must be more of a man than he is. There is a lesson there.
thoughts? yeah, let's just carry on pretending that trying to stop people emitting "forbidden noises" from their face makes a blind bit of difference to anything. It does nothing to change our deeply ingrained nature that sometimes expresses itself as racism. There's too much of this stupid bull**** around these days.

Exactly! Game over. It is about reckless and criminal behavior.

"Thug" seems pretty popular in politics when discussing Republicans.
This guy's a jerk, but he does say what I've felt for a long time now. The word "thug" is thrown around a lot these days, typically to describe a young black male a (usually) white person simply doesn't like, and given the context (eg, not related to criminality) easily replaced with the "n-word" in most cases.
Thoughts?
This is such a non-story......my god. Play the game already.
Thug = the "N" word...??? Hardly. The term has been largely in play here in the US since the days of Al Capone, and highly doubt the societal meaning has morphed that much since then. Perhaps the term "Hood Rat" might be a bit more appropriate?
