I don't know about you...but I PAY for this freaking internet......
You pay a company to turn the switch on and send internet (also electricity, water, gas, phone) to your house and maintain your account, but how do you think all the wires connecting the internet from the source to your house got there? Who built and then launched all those satellites into space so you can have WiFi? The government via tax dollars.

The great majority of people on benefits have a job, over 80% of them. No one feels entitled to have welfare, they just have this weird thing about wanting to eat and have shelter. In fact as a person who needed unemployment for about a year, signing up for it feels pretty ****ty. And if you are so annoyed by people using thses services, then fight to raise the minimum wage and viola! They won't need them anymore .

I don't care to get in to your debate about social services, but just want to point out how wrong you are about the internet. You should probably do some research before spouting off about wifi over satellite and all the other nonsense above.

Maybe I'm missing something, but to me your thinking seems so wildly off, even in terms of the premises, that I can't envision a realistic answer.

First, you seem to wrongly assume that America functions differently because we have the phrase "consent of the governed" in our founding documents. But clearly in countries all over the world, people are governed, and no one gives a thought about individual consent.

Second, I don't understand your thinking that tax is based on some kind of privilege.

Third, if there were no taxes, presumably there would be no government at all.

But, for the sake of argument, I think the result would be chaos, and degenerate into hell. Children wouldn't be educated (apart from the wealthy who hired tutors) so the workforce would decay, goods would soon not be able to be transported, corporations would become even more rapacious than they are now, with a total unconcern for public welfare, etc.

True.
But according to the Declaration of Independence, government has TWO jobs:
1) secure rights, and
2) govern those who consent.
Those who did not consent, should only be charged taxes for job #1 - securing rights, as in the justice system, and little else.

But charging compulsory taxes for THE FOLLOWING is beyond "securing rights."

Remember, socialism = collectivism = communism = abolition of PRIVATE PROPERTY.
  • If the GOVERNMENT is directly operating things, it definitely is NOT in the private sector.
  • If the GOVERNMENT is indirectly in control, via voluminous regulations and burdensome taxes, it is still a form of CONTROL that is in violation of private property rights.
From the Communist manifesto:
"In this sense, the theory of the Communists may be summed up in the single sentence: Abolition of private property."

Beyond securing rights, governments should not tread.

I don't think taxes and government programs can ever be totally eliminated, but I would be in favor of a change in the tax system and the privatization of as much as possible.

For taxes, I would support a shift from income taxes to taxes on imports and a luxury tax. Prior to the income tax, federal revenues came from tariffs and a excise tax on alcohol and tobacco (each providing about half the revenue).

For privatization, it already is happening. Look at the space industry, charter schools, military contractors, etc. I think the government will continue to have some input, but less so as time goes on.
