Texting and talking both have their place. Texting is cool for quick updates and when you want to say something quick. Texting works best with co-workers but shouldn't be overused for family or close friends. It can be a very impersonal form of communication and it can be construed as avoidance behavior without actually avoiding someone.

I admit I'm old and I don't get the desire to communicate continually the way that younger people do.

My parents didn't understand how I could play video games so much and their generation was sure it would spell disaster because mine spent so much time on them.

In the '50's it was rock-n-roll. Don't waste your time trying to understand or fight against intergenerational behavior disparities. They just are and you'll wind up crushed and defeated if you try to take them on. It's clear that being attached to your cell phone is the way people are going to behave from now on. At least until the next thing comes along.

I find texting to be useful when I just want to impart some information that doesn't require an answer from the other party.

I prefer it, as I don't have to remember work schedules of family & friends--they can text me back when convenient. I work in a hospital & can't answer phone calls while caring for patients, but I can text/answer texts when not busy. I also work at night & sleep during the day, so it's more comfortable for me to receive texts. My current (as well as previous) job uses text messaging to notify staff of vital info--group texts can be used to get in touch with everyone at the same time. I like being able to attach/receive pictures or screenshots from others. I find I'm more connected with my friends & family. 10 phone calls a day from one person is insane, but 10 texts aren't.

Nope! He's in a whole different industry than I am. I don't know anything about what he does and certainly know no one in his industry. He did it all on his own.

And about your wife's kids....they are HER kids, too, right? She had at least partial custody? Then, yes, it is partly her fault those kids can't handle technology. Moderation in everything.

Now I gotta go text my kids...I don't want to interrupt their Friday nights (out with friends, on dates, etc.), but I do want to share some info with them.

Have a great night. TTYL.
