With London voting in Sadiq Khan the first Muslim mayor of a major western city i'm interested to see what you guys think. If a Muslim man/women was running for a major position in the United States would you vote for him/her?

I didn't know weather I should put this in great debates or elections so I put it in the Great Debates section since the quality of commentators seems to be better .

I rarely vote. And overly religious people freak me out, regardless of religion. Also I know a lot of muslims, having spent years working with refugees.

So overall, sure, I might vote for a Muslim, if 1) he talks sense about things that are important to me, 2) doesn't make religion a part of his campaign, 3) and if I don't feel lazy on elections day...

By the way, Hamtramck city in Detroit has majority-muslim city council.

Certainly - if I preferred their policies over those of the other candidates in an election.

Why not? I've voted for Christians and Jews (and probably a few atheists who were smart enough to realize that not paying lip-service to one deity or another is the electoral kiss of death).

There's already a US federal congress member who's Muslim. It's nothing new. He gets interviewed from time to time, for analysis on ISIS and other issues in the news relating to Muslims and the West.

If the person is a Muslim running for office, then it depends entirely on the person and his policies. If it is a person running for office AS a Muslim, i.e., the fact he is a Muslim is his central topic, then no. Same for someone running for office of any other religion, or of a specific race, gender, etc.

"Vote for me because I believe [insert political issue here]", then maybe.
"Vote for me because I'm Muslim/Christian/black/female/male/Hispanic/gay/straight/whatever", then probably not.

A majority of Americans already voted for a muslim in 2008 and 2012.

I think it is ridiculous that any politician would come out swinging with his bible, koran or any other religion. The masses don't care for the most part who or what you worship.
I don't know why religion is even a topic when it comes to electing someone.

Religion should be a private personal thing.
Anyone that I have ever known that goes on and on about God the bible etc has been a bit loony.

Ted Cruz was a bit over the top and look where he is. If a muslim candidate came forward and didn't run on the fact that he or she was a muslim I might vote for them. It should be all about the issues.

I think what's key is that at least for the office of president the candidate must be native born. To me, that is likelier the bigger issue than whether he or she is Muslim.

Certainly I would consider all past actions in addition to religion. I wouldn't vote for a conservative fundamentalist Baptist who is anti the things I consider important and the same goes for a Catholic or a Muslim. It may be more difficult to find a "liberal" Muslim but if they fit then I'd consider them.

An American Muslim who was a good citizen would be the same as anyone else.

I care very much if someone is a religious zealot, whatever the stripe.

I have probably voted for Muslims on the local level (eg. a respected doctor on a hospital board), as I don't investigate whether someone is a member of a certain religion, but if I know someone to be a fundamentalist zealot—whether a fundamentalist polygamist Mormon, a Scientologist (which is a cult, really, not a religion, regardless of their tax status), a Hasidic Jew, a right-wing Evangelical Christian Fundamentalist, a Chabad-Lubavitcher, a Moyl/Mohel, a fundamentalist Muslim, or whatever—no I would not vote for them.
