I happen to be deeply perturbed about the strong possibility that there was Russian interference in our presidential election, whether via collusion, deliberately planted "fake news," or just improperly spreading money around. However, almost no one is mentioning the fact that the U.S. has also engaged in similar bad behavior.
So I was particularly interested to hear of a Carnegie Mellon study on the subject. According to Carnegie Mellon University researcher Dov Levin, the United States has the worst record of electoral interference, with 80 interventions between 1946 and 2000, two-thirds of which were covert operations unknown to the people of the United States.
Most likely Trump and company, as well as his supporters, love the circus of distraction this Russian issue has created. When we think about the REAL issues facing us we know something can't be right about the hoopla surrounding the Russians and Trump. It's as good a ploy as any in the search for meaningless news stories which serve to get the national focus centered on anything other than those pressing issues of economics, education, health care, etc. Read James Howard Kunstler's blog for an amusing treatment of this boondoggle. I disagree that Trump is enjoying this particular distraction. My personal belief is that there is a high likelihood that something improper happened with Russia, whether it's Trump's direct, corrupt collusion, or just Russia's independent meddling. And although I agree that Trump loves the "circus," I suspect that he's aware that this could potentially harm him in a big way.
However, that's irrelevant to my main point - which is about our blindness or hypocrisy when something bad is done to us.

I would imagine Trump's favoring the Russian theatrical fiasco, at least to the extent that this defers the real issues to the back burner in media land. Trump is a guy who needed a lot of outside help in maintaining his "brand," Casinos, resorts, real estate, and other ventures have taken a ton of money to develop, the Russians have money to invest, not exactly a new thing in US politics, it's all part of political favoritism, in both parties.
Corruption in American politics has become a common event, the irony of Trump being president lies in the fact of his supporters thinking of him as an "outsider," completely ignoring his life long upper class standing. Corruption is every bit as rampant in the upper reaches of society as it is in the ghetto gangsta culture, high or low, a criminal is still a criminal. America got caught up in a real quagmire this last election, the choice of criminally corrupt politicians truly left us to hold our nose and vote.
I'm not outraged. Nothing new about this. I don't think it affected the results. When very liberal Alan Dershowitz says it's a witch hunt I believe it. Obama said it did not affect the results.
The media decides what goes on the back burner, not the president. They choose what to report.
We have killed foreign leaders, financed civil wars, and many other things that are much worse than what Russia is accused of. When I was in college the Iranian students were always protesting the Shah. What do you think we did in that country over the years? What do you think the purpose of Radio Free Europe was?

Why can't election meddling be a good thing? If an election is essentially being rigged from the start, interference can actually work to improve a more democratic outcome. There is nothing democratic about people being lied to.
