Judges, juries, and society does, sadly.

Usually the folks with high powered and expensive lawyers get less punishment than folks with public defenders.

While I agree that the mother should not get a harsher sentence than the killer in the above described scenario; I feel like the privilege of being a mother means you are held to a higher standard than that of “cowering in a corner”.

If I saw anyone torturing my children? I might not make it very far but I’m coming out of that corner. It would at least give them a chance to run for it.

If I were to actually do nothing but cower in a corner I WOULD request the death penalty for myself; I couldn’t live with myself after that.

I know PLENTY of young women who have landed in legal trouble over illegal drugs, even some who were sent to state prison over drugs! Im not sure why LE is not discriminating in regards to this these days, its pretty common knowledge that young white women (especially those on the attractive side), DO NOT get into legal trouble over these things.

Apparently that women should protest and request harsher punishment.

Female here.
Sure! Let me sign the petition. I'm all for equality in judicial rulings.
If ever I recall a decision that made even justice want to remain blind,t was the lorena bobbitz case. Let it be a man mutilating a female and I am 100% certain he'd been in jail likity split. But this lady gets heralded .

So, for instance if you were arrested for DUI and the judge decided to suspend your license for 6 months you would protest and demand jail time because men are given jail time 7 times more often than women? And if you were arrested for murder you would not take a plea bargain to reduce the charge to manslaughter but would demand the death penalty because men are given the death penalty more often than women?

There's certainly a lot of women who claim this as their defense when charged with crimes. It's quite funny how women want to be seen as strong, capable, empowered, and equal to men, until they're charged with a crime. Then suddenly they claim to be helpless little girls with no agency of their own.

And since you claim this occurs "very often", I presume you can cite a few cases where this has actually happened? I won't hold my breath.

No, I think you should acknowledge your privilege and use it to benefit those who are marginalized. I'm being about 20% snarky but 80% serious.

You're right, and there are groups like the Innocence Project that are working tirelessly to make sure that people who are unjustly convicted get a fair shake.

Some of us are wary that the OP has an axe to grind--if there is bias, it's not women in general who are responsible for it (heck, anyone who faces a judge wants to get off with the lightest punishment possible.) It's not productive to point the finger at women, who are not the parties making these legal decisions. We should be looking at a better way to advocate for justice than just piling up statistics and saying it's not fair.

It's the neo-feminist dichotomy.

Women are strong, capable, smart, fearless, don't need no help ... until they are weak, helpless, and need saving because they are victims.

It's a very disturbing paradigm. And is used to advantage in the legal system. Every woman using the legal system is a weak, hapless, victim.
