Why not modeled after the USA or some other western democracy?
Possibly because Western democracy doesn't offer an answer to the masses seeking a life of permanent indolence, and turning the streets of our West Coast cities in open sewers.
The unfortunate fact is that most of us find out, somewhere between the ages of 25 and 40, that our credentials will only take us so far, and we end up "playing out the string" in a regimented workplace where the key to advancement is finding out a way to get the unwanted jobs done or, worse yet, just learning to live with doing it yourself.
A key, and unsettling characteristic of the Snowflakes drawn toward the Social Justice nostrum is that they seem to be finding this out at an earlier age.

No one said anything about getting rid of police. In fact, the OP specifically noted that police would still be around. Just talking about massive standing armies/armed forces.
…
You'd still need some military-style equipment & the equivalent of troops under military discipline - MASH, mobile generators, comms, airlift, sealift, hospital ship or two - if nothing else, for response to natural disaster - earthquake, tsunami, catastrophic nuclear reactor failure. If a 747 crashes & burns in an urban area somewhere. If the San Andreas or the New Madrid fault ever shift catastrophically, you'll need all the equipment & manpower you can muster & it probably still won't be enough.
But no, in size & numbers - you wouldn't need the entire current US military. Maybe a tenth of the current size, plus a good-sized & equipped & practiced national guard contingent as backup - just in case.
Assume that at some time in the future the entire world is united under one government. Not like the UN or the EU, where a bunch of sovereign nations join together giving up some of their autonomy but still remain separate independent nations. I'm talking the entire planet is under one and only one government, let's call it the Republic of Earth. Any regional or local governments are created by and subordinate to the worldwide government.
In such a scenario, would we still need to maintain a military? Militaries exist primarily to protect against aggression from other governments (or to initiate that aggression). But if there is only one government, who is the military supposed to fight?
Obviously some aspects of the military would still be needed, like search and rescue. And law enforcement may take on a slightly different appearance as it assumes some of the sub-national threat responses that the military now handles (piracy, terrorism).
But would/should the Republic of Earth maintain a separate and distinct military? If so, what would it's role be? And how big would it be?

Well, some body got to keep the Bugs out, fight the Aliens and Predators, besides, who is going to police the Intergalactic Space Port and manage the fugitive and refugee aliens? The Men In Black, are really just baby sisters and specialize in handling the stray renegade.
The local Godzilla, Motha, [Graboids, Shrieker, AssBlaster], and dinosaur and relations will be dealt with by the local militias.
aliens show up, and mankind has forgotten how to fight a war.
If aliens show up, their technology would have to be extremely advanced. So much so, we would have about as much chance to successfully resist an invasion as the East Timorese were able to resist the Indonisian invasion. Or any technologically backward country invaded by a civilization with much more advanced firepower.

In other words, don't worry, be happy.
Not necessarily. We have the technology now to build a generation ship capable of reaching another star system in a matter of centuries with a few hundred or thousand people if we had to, something we might consider doing if earth was facing some extinction level disaster (like an asteroid going to hit the earth and wipe out all life-there have been a few books, tv shows, and movies about such an event). An alien race about the same level as us technologically or slightly more advanced might be faced with such a disaster and send such a ship out. If/when they get here they might decide they need the earth more than we do.

No. Our scientists were barely able to keep a dozen people alive for a few years in that biosphere in Arizona, where they have sunlight and air. No way we have the technlogy to keep hundreds of people alive for the thousands of years it would take to get to the nearest stars.
