Assume that at some time in the future the entire world is united under one government. Not like the UN or the EU, where a bunch of sovereign nations join together giving up some of their autonomy but still remain separate independent nations. I'm talking the entire planet is under one and only one government, let's call it the Republic of Earth. Any regional or local governments are created by and subordinate to the worldwide government.
In such a scenario, would we still need to maintain a military? Militaries exist primarily to protect against aggression from other governments (or to initiate that aggression). But if there is only one government, who is the military supposed to fight?
Obviously some aspects of the military would still be needed, like search and rescue. And law enforcement may take on a slightly different appearance as it assumes some of the sub-national threat responses that the military now handles (piracy, terrorism).
But would/should the Republic of Earth maintain a separate and distinct military? If so, what would it's role be? And how big would it be?
If you have no threats why do you need military? Their possible task is only to be the background in historic movies.
But we keep in mind possibility of revolts etc. Hence military is necessary. As Marks and Engels said a class state always needs a power to hold the order of things (property rights). Therefore the Republic of Earth will have an army but I'm afraid the progress in war technic will stop or will be very slow (as it was before about 1700s).

In the western world that most of us are accustomed to living in, sure. In Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc ...

The military would fight rebels.... just like in Star Wars. And there'd be a lot of them, once the elites got done spending everyone else's money and the reality began to set in.
Even assuming somehow the worlds nations united under one government, as a totally benign republic, you would still have too many places where there is effectively little to no government that would need a military of some form to control the chaos and lawlessness. The problem with these world government scenarios is the assumption that everyone is in some sort of first world paradise. Even if we lived in the world of Star Trek, there will be places like Afghanistan that are still just as they are today and have been for centuries.
The imperial empire seems to be the one galaxy rule similar to what you envision. But all the others who don't think that's such a great idea band together as resistance/rebellion against their rule.
People who know freedom won't just accept their freedom being taken from them many would fight and risk everything for their freedom. The only way people will be controlled is by force. You need an institution to do that and put down internal dissent.
And I am extremely anti globalist and very pro nationalist so that's a disclaimer on my .02cents
Why do you think Agenda 21 outlaws the private ownership of guns? Control.
Agenda 21 and 2030 are very real and more people need to understand what it's all about.
