The fact that Americans are so mobile and mostly live in large urban areas is a HUGE factor in the "success" of serial killers in this country. In a society where people move around all the time, where you seldom get to know your neighbors very well is a perfect environment for people like the Green River Killer (who actually worked less than a 1/4 mile from my home, and dumped a victim a few blocks away).

Think about it folks, how long would someone with murderous tendencies get away with it in a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business (as it usually the case in a small town)? The answer is - not very long at all. In a place like that EVERYONE knows who the "troubled" people are - in fact, everyone knows EVERYTHING about EVERYONE. Same thing USED to be true even in the large cities because before so many folks had cars people still tended to know everyone in their neighborhood - even if that neighborhood happened to be in the middle of a large city. Someone might commit a murder once, but it's unlikely that he wouldn't be a suspect right away. And even if he hid those tendencies he would still probably be found out everyone comparing notes in regards to who was where at what time.

Nowadays however, with everyone having cars and the mobility that grants us, folks don't tend to hang around in their neighborhoods the way they used to. Instead, they move about as they wish and in effect we've all (well, many of us anyway) become sort of modern-day gypsies. The result is that no one really knows their neighbors so sick folks such as Ted Bundy etc can more easily hide their actions by simply committing their crimes in an area where no one recognizes or remembers them. They can successfully "pretend" to be normal while around their small circle of acquaintances and let their "true selves" come out only where off somewhere else with people who don't know them. And, when things start getting too hot, they can simply move on.

Ken
Even though the BTK killer lived in the same home for years, even though Ed Gein lived in the same home for years...many serial killers are more mobile, some even moving from one state to another.

This is an incomplete list, which may never be able to satisfy certain standards for completeness. You can help by expanding it.
This is a partial list of mass murders and spree killings perpetrated by individuals, organised by the number of dead victims, further divided into several subsections. The intention behind this list is not to provide a complete overview of incidents, otherwise it would grow out of proportions very soon, but concentrates on cases that stick out by their sheer number of victims.
As there's often conflicting information about the number of dead and injured, which do not include the perpetrators themselves, in cases of uncertainty a range is given.

I don't really want to spend the time going through the minutia, but here's an example from one of your wikipedia links related to spree killings: According to the article, the Phillipines owns about 14% of the most recent and most infamous spree killings. The United States owns about 26%. The Phillipines is about 30% the size of the United States in terms of population. By those numbers, a weighted percentage would suggest that the Phillipines is about 55% more f*cked up than the USA per capita. These links are meaningless in terms of statistical analysis because we have biased and incomplete data.

Can you offer a hypothesis re: the apparent bloodthirstiness of Americans?

You don't have valid numbers. Using Wikipedia is pointless. It says right at the top that it's a list of NOTABLE serial killers. AKA serial killers everyone's heard of.

Start getting some real facts and not just crap off Wikipedia and maybe people will believe you.

BTW, nice job on bashing America. Well done. I'm glad I'm serving the country for people like you.

Yeah, you're serving all Americans, even the bad ones. Those who kill, rob, rape, and assault other people.

In another thread, I listed the killers who served in the military. Interesting list. Did you know that the incidence of domestic violence is higher in the military than in the general population?

Serial killers are NOT more prevalent in America, they are just noted, sensationalized and captured more often. Serial killers suffer from personality disorders and it is a world-wide thing...but only in America do we hear about every crime that occurs and our media sees to it that it is all sensationalized. In a 3rd world country, who would notice a serial killer? People die and are killed frequently...it would not be noted nor embellished as it is here.

not shooting armed people that confront us is causing a whole lota problems.
So whenever there is a drive by shooting it is automatically a 'black' crime, but somehow serial killing & serial raping are not considered a 'white' crime?
Even though the usual profile of a serial killer is a white male?

running and hiding is not working well. the law needs to change.
LoL So now you want to bring back mob justice? America already has the death penalty as the ultimate crime deterrent and now you want to be able to play judge, jury & executioner at the same time?
I guess this proves why America has the most serial killers.

A serial killer does not make a society, but I agree with you that if a large majority of the population of a society 'worships' serial killers as if they are celebrities I can only reach the logical conclusion that this society has gone insane.

well how about this one.... Internet Crime Archives or this one....All Serial Killers dot com.. i can supply you links all night and if you have not heard of these people then you must have lived in a hole for the last 20 years. Your service to this country has no bearing in this argument because it isn't about you and i really don't care if you run off to shoot at people for a year not my buisness the one thing you can't deny is that although this is not unique to America there is more twisted people here than anywhere else. just look at the list of school shootings i provided who had the most? we did of course.. I think some people in this country and others view it as a competitive challenge back in the day if you shot a couple of people you were on tv for days now you better have a huge body count just to get a mention. Most people who commit some of these crimes also have a rage inside them that makes no sense, I really don"t know what you can do to a human being to make them this depraved. btw heres a few links for some vets who unleashed the rage on society as a serial killer or mass killer........ Friends of Liberty - Military training links string of serial killers

Robert Lee Yates was the Spokane serial killer, from The Crime Library - Crime Library on truTV.com

[MOD CUT/orphaned]
Face the facts the stats have spoken volumes on this and facts don't lie, the question is why does america lead the world? Why are Americans more disposed to do horrible sadistic things to each other?
