Yes, selfishness is bad. Your definition of selfish isn't really accurate at all. define: selfish - Google Search

No--being "selfish" isn't bad--sometimes it will save your sanity! Folks need to learn to say "NO"! I learned that a long time ago, when a family member started taking advantage of me. "NO" is powerful! And there's nothing wrong with NOT doing things you don't want to!

[SIZE=-1]"Holding one’s self-interest as the standard for decision making; Regard for oneself above others’ well-being"

based on what i said, all actions (nearly) are inherently this. the aprty example shows this

Well it is wrong and I don't believe in your assessment that most all actions are that.

Being selfish mostly leads to being egocentric and / or being a hedonist.
Rapists always act egoistic and hedonistic (and most of them are egocentric).
Besidez, a selfish parent will generally lead to a master-slave relation where the child will never become a true equal (read: considered an adult) by the parent, instead of a loving relation between parent and child (where the child eventually will become the parentís equal).

So yeah, being selfish is bad.

when i was a kid, somewhere along the line, someone told me that being selfish was bad. in my 7 or 8 year old brain, that meant that caring about myself was bad and wrong, and i should care about everyone else before myself or else i wouldn't be a good person.

that inevitably led to a lot of confidence issues, with me thinking that i had to put everyone else first, and that i shouldn't burden anyone with my problems because everyone else was more important. because if i was just talking about myself to people, then i was being selfish and, thus, a bad person.

it's taken a very long time, but i've finally gotten to the point where i realize that i have to take care of myself before i can take care of anyone else.

The thing is that a selfish person would only take care of another person if he would benefit from it.
So if he would not benefit from helping people a selfish person would not lift a finger to help others.

I must be misunderstanding your use of the word selfish. I define selfish as taking what you want to the detriment of others. Making wise decisions for ones self does not fall into that catagory. Sounds to me like this course is a waste of somebody's time and money and I doubt that you will get your thesis here.

Every living thing is "selfish" to survive. Just like on airplanes, they tell you to put on your oxygen mask before you help others. You always have to look out for yourself first, or you're no good to anyone else! I don't advocate being nasty or not helping when you can, but looking out for yourself is a good thing! No one else will do it for you!

That really isn't what selfish means to most people. Selfish is usually negative.
