Where will they go? Say, our ten-year-old 5th-graders. There are a couple of million of them. Is, for most of them, the limitations of their future already pretty well mapped out for each one of them?

The one in the back row who hasn't learned to read yet---what will become of him? Might he be the president, or an astronaut, or a surgeon, as we think "anybody" can?

Fast forward, 20 yours. What will your children. when they log onto a message board like this. say about those now-grown-up kids? Will they say "It's all their own fault, for not taking personal responsiblity"? When they are ten years old.

Your use of the term "whining" implies that you are blaming them. Already. At the age of ten.

Do you favor any social or economic policies that would tend to reduce the gap between the rich and poor, so they might not need to whine about it, or does it suit your purposes just the way it is?

They said that same stuff when I was in high school in the late 1970's. Our country is changing towards socialism and the "state" will take care of the people who aren't acheivers.

Also, most kids mature and there are always opportunities abounding to assist people to make something of themselves. I wouldn't be too concerned.

Well, throwing money at an already failing system is one solution. Personally, I believe the problem for that ten year old is two fold -- his parent(s) and his educational system.
Let's face it, if parents don't put a premium on education why would the child? If the parent doesn't care if the child does his homework, why would the child?
The second half of this failing equation would be the American education system that is so damn busy teaching 'tests' that teaching the actual material has fallen by the wayside.
I am not sure what the answer is since eugenics is out and politicians will be worshipping at the feet of the NEA for decades to come....

I guess if a nation worships money, the only solution they can think of is to throw money at a problem. If that doesn't work, they just shrug and say "We tried"

I wonder what would happen to America if anybody actually threw interest or concern or caring at a problem, instead of just throwing money at it. What would happen if an entire school district actually CARED if all the kids did well at school, and not just your own, and not just the band. An entire city. State. Nation.

Oh, it's so much easier to just blame the kids, and keep blaming them when they grow up, and tell them it is their own fault if they cannot find a way to get rich, and deny them a helping hand when their world keeps slipping farther and farther down.

Why is it America's responsibility for my kids? I sure as he!! am not going to let the gov't teach my kids "everything".

I'm responsible for my kids, and no one else. If they can't spell, add, read, or think; then I must do better. We see our kids' own "weaknesses" and help address them, we don't expect someone else to do that for us.

Money isn't the issue, caring adults that want their kids to do great IS.

If you expect the govt' to raise your kid for you, then you are NOT a parent.

Who said anything about the government? I suggested that the people, our society, should care about them. and you have stated loud and clear that you don't give a Flying F* about them. Your point is made and noted.

It is you who is forcing our government to do all that it does, because you hide in your cave and refuse to care about the well being of anybody except your own family. If you cared, the government would not need to. In fact, you don't even know the meaning of the word CARE, because when I used it, you didn't know what I was talking about, and blathered off on your usual rant about the government, which had not previously been referenced.
