Children who attend top quality pre-schools are R I C H . Why does it surprise you that they also attend top quality high schools and top quality colleges and get admitted to top quality country clubs? And have health insurance, and have drugs to combat their depression, and daddy gets them good jobs, and "top quality pre-schools" makes about the same contribution to success as Gucci shoes.

If only that drop-out single mom living in a project with two minimum wage jobs and a broken car would just put her kids in top-quality preschools 20 miles out in the suburbs, everyting would be milk and honey from then on.

I wonder of those researchers, with several million dollars in grant money to do this research, pretended they were surprised when they found out that rich kids go to college and poor kids go to jail.

Start eliminating about 90 percent of the laws (which shouldn't exist in the first place). Then with the rest, which would be true crimes (murder, theft, arson, and so forth), make them work hard at prison. But, the courts should be responsible for finding the truth not getting a conviction, and defense should get the same resources as the prosecution. Eliminate the incorrect and abusive actions of the justice system, as those people then become bitter and if they weren't actually guilty beforehand, they'll likely go become criminals afterwards.

would it be better off to have all prisoners in isolation?

be more expensive, because we have to build more prisons, but perhaps they would be less likely to get instructed in how to be better criminals...

Just need to be careful not to drive them insane (that's what happened when that was tried in the 19th century for a while).

The real problem is the criminal s are no longer teh !% of socirty. Its like 20% now days and worse in many areas. The prison system is broke because we can sentence people and have the sentence mean what it is so no one believes in any sentence.

I think the problem is twofold; 1) the justice system is too lax on punishment ex. someone who gets a sentence of 9 years will only serve 6 due to good behavior, parole, etc. 2) Society in general; we glorify criminals (especially organized crime and gangsters) and make excuses for their actions so it should come as no shock that we have so much crime.

Some ideas:

1) If you sentenced to 15 years you do 15 years right down to the very last second. Build more prisons and jails if we have too as that = more jobs for construction workers, staff (correction officers and civilian employees), etc.

2) Reduce the use of probation and place more emphasis on serving time.

3) Bring back the death penalty and actually use it.

What I'd be interested in is knowing if there is a country whose society and penal system do honestly work well. I know of none.
I do, it's called the city state Republic of Singapore and they execute drug dealers/smugglers and cane people for spitting in public ... and it works. Unfortunatly such measures would be considered barbaric in the US, we can't even approve of executing serial killers much less drug dealers and drug smugglers. Virtually every nation in Asia and the Middle East punishes drug smuggling and dealing with the death penalty ... however most nations in that part of the world are either absolute monarchies or near dictatorships.
