I've always believed that the sound occurs only when it is heard and if there is nothing there to process the signal all you have is sonic waves traveling through the woods like a radio signal without a receiver.
Do you mean, like when the wind blows through the trees the leaves move but don't rustle? Total silence? That would be interesting, though not as delightful as being there to hear all the sounds of nature which, I think, enhance greatly our enjoyment outdoors.

Sound occurs to a recipient only when the recipient is there, assuming it's between 20 and 20K Hz, from the perspective of a recipient.
But sound does exist, it's just that there is nothing to receive or calibrate it.
The radio receiver receives the signal and calibrates it, selectively. A lot of signals are existent irrespective of whether the receiver is present or not. They will simply not be received.

Since I hear nothing my husband says I can tell him that technically, I did not receive his signal transmission and therefore, I cannot be accused of ignoring him anymore. All I hear is static.

so, if I have a recorder setup and record the vibrations created by the tree, carried by the air and listen to it later.....when is the sound created? At the time the tree fell and was recorded, or when I listened to the machine? If not until I listened, then what did the recorder record?

Sound existed even before sound was discovered by humans. We just called it sound.
