That will happen right after the war and before the enslavement of America.

If you mean a firearm capable of fully automatic fire (one trigger pull = firing till empty), fully automatic weapons have been restricted since the early 1930's. Special licenses and transfer fees have to be obtained in order to own or sell one of these.

When the term assault weapon is used by gun control advocates they usually include semi-automatic weapons (one trigger pull fires only one round). This can be used to outlaw almost all guns used in hunting and self defense.

That is the logic behind the NRA's thinking.

Historically gun control groups always want more. They will not be happy until there are absolutely NO GUNS in the hands of law abiding citizens.

But somehow I think you already know that.

Thank you for an explaination that makes some sense to me. . . and BTW, you are wrong, I didn't "already know that". . .
I am, presumbably by nature, a person who rejects violence as a way of life. I can be fairly accused of eating meat but being unwilling to kill animals for that purpose myself. I do not have negative feelings for those who use guns for sports purposes (target, etc.,) nor for those who hunt for food. . . I wish that "hunting" for sport was done with a camera rather than a gun, but I also understand that sport hunting groups have a real incentive to avoid specie extinction of their game animals.
As I am not a gun owner or gun advocate myself, I did assume that "automatic" weapons were those that fired more than once with a trigger pull. If the NRA honestly believes that a ban on automatic weapons is a first step in eliminating all personal firearms, then I can at least understand their position, and that IS what I was asking for, a way to understand.

Aha. CAN be. Of course, guns CAN be confiscated without going through the pesky first step of registering them first, right? That happened in many countries, including Iraq the minute we made the Iraqis free and repealed their own 2nd Amendment. So registration is really completely irrelevant to your argument, and it makes no difference whatsoever if they are registered or not. If they want them, they will take them, using shock and awe if necessary.

Can you give me one, just one, tiny example of something that you were required to register, and then it was taken away? Just one? Even a little one?

So take off your panties and give them a good shake and put them back on, and I think you'll feel much better.

As a social liberal I would be terrified of a gun free America. Crime would still exist at a high level but the killings would be done with knives instead. Knife violence has increased exponentially in England as a result of their hard line stance on guns. I am for strict training and gun education! Even though Ive never owned a real gun in my life (Juast pellet and BB guns when younger) I fully support and believe in the 2nd Amendment, hence my NRA membership. I call on all my fellow social liberals and any American for that matter who is against an armed society to please educate yourselves and support this wonderful freedom that we have as Americans.

Guns, though, are unique among the various common lethal weapons. Guns enable you to kill another human being with needing to hold the pesky little bugger down. I can run away from an assailant with a knife, a broken bottle, a baseball bat.

If you could snap your fingers and suddenly guns neither existed nor did anyone have any concept of what they were or motivation to invent such an item, yes it could work. But just as Utopia could exist in theory, it just isn’t going to happen in the real world. Lot’s of things ‘could’ be, but never will be.

Barring the magic trick above, gun control will have little effect on criminals… but a very large effect on decent, law-abiding citizens. Ask yourself how well the ‘ban on drugs’ works. Do people still find and use drugs? Do they give a damn if they are illegal? The thing the gun control crowd doesn’t seem to understand is that criminals do not care what’s legal or illegal. They’re going to do it anyway. Isn’t that why they are called criminals?

As for the idea of a ‘moral and decent society’: Read Sir Thomas More’s Utopia. You certainly have a moral and decent society in that work. Now ask yourself if there is a snowball’s chance in hell of that ever existing on this planet? We may never know More’s true intent in writing Utopia, but in the end, More himself found out just how far from Utopia this planet is. As an aside, would you rather die like More… or simply be shot with one of those wicked guns? People kill other people--guns or no guns.

But if you try to attack me with that knife, broken bottle or baseball bat, you will be dead.

I can judge all I want, the forefathers and Minutemen of the Revolutionar War are to thank for that. Where do you get your information that Brits live longer than Americans? Maybe it's all that bland food they eat over there

But you can't outrun my car. Twice as many Americans die in car accidents than by gunfire. Most Americans killed by firearms are suicides. Take away guns and people will resort to homemade bombs, knives, poison, or throwing people off of roof tops. Hitler confiscated guns from the Jews, we all know how that turned out.

And the Americans confiscated all the guns from the Iraqis, and we know how that turned out.

The Miraculous Anecdotal Example. You can prove anything, irrefutably, with an anecdotal example.

They warned me, vote for Goldwater and the war in Vietnam will be escalated. Sure enough, I voted for Goldwater, and look what happened!
