In my opinion, I think economies need to be localized. (Not Protectionism!). I think we need to get away from Economies of Scale and the squeeze of large corporations. We have seen some of this with the Green movement. Buying produce from local, organic sources. I think this same concept can be applied to Industry and Commerce as well.
I wholeheartedly agree with this. It's a far less dangerous way to play the game. When you are eating food from local producers, it matters far less what is going on in Mexico or Chile. It matters far less that the truckers are on strike. Of course, if the local crops fail, then it matters to you, but it doesn't matter to someone on the other side of the country. That is when assistance from other areas comes into play.
But we shouldn't be relying on the whole world ALL the time for our sustenance. It just seems foolhardy to me. I have nothing against buying produce from Chile. It’s great stuff... but I don’t want to completely rely on it to keep me alive.
Mainly because everyone is convinced that there are only two flavors of ice cream. It has never occurred to them that there may indeed be other flavors.
No its because they are use to eating well which people in socialist countries. They also like to see ice cream on the shelfs when they want some too.
The latest positive indicator was a scheme where 200 thousand debt-stricken people borrowed 15K each to buy a new car they didn't need, to keep the auto plants from going dark. While 200,000 poor working Americans remain stuck with an unreliable clunker, while watching a better car go into a crusher. Things like that are our economy's highlights.
You hit the nail on the head with this one. My dad is a finance manager for a couple of our region's dealerships and this is exactly what he has been talking about. He has been so utterly frustrated with this "cash for clunkers" fiasco he's ready to pop! He said he would like to send a very frank letter to the president asking what the heck they were thinking. The value of used cars has definitely gone up but now there are less used cars on the market. Making it all the more impossible for poor people to try and acquire one thats a little better than the one they're driving now. You know who cashed in on the cash for clunkers deal the most? Middle class folks that are doing ok and traded in their second vehicle. Yep, you heard me, second vehicle. So, the poor people with that one really crappy clunker weren't the ones benefiting from the deal. Also, this program is in stall mode because all the applications go to one place to be processed--for the entire country! My dad's dealership has gotten 2 approvals since this whole thing started. So, they have a car-lot full of clunkers that they haven't destroyed yet (thank god bc some dealers have before getting approval). And they also have their car-lot full of new cars that they can't deliver until they are approved for the program. And on top of that, the dealership has no inventory left. And they aren't scheduled to receive any new inventory until october or november.
I'm sorry I went on a rant about the cash for clunkers thing which is a little off subject but it just goes to show that the government is fooling the public into thinking things are honky dorey when, in reality, behind the scenes, its a mess!

That's now how it works. We don't rely on them. We rely on the fact that there is more depth in the sources, so if we can't get something from one place, we can get it from the other.
If you completely relied on produce from Chile, what would you be eating now, when winter is just ending down there? But without some reliance on Chile, where would you get produce in March?
"Why is it people are always slamming socialism, which this country will never be, when we see what capitalism has done to us"
Well other than the government and some high government officials owning everything and all the freedom you lose like freedom of speech for one, and being totally dependent on the government to tell you how to run you're life, no thanks! I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees.
I think, in the long run, down the tubes. I do see, perhaps, a bit of resurgence for a time as Obama Inc, or whoever is next, keeps applying band-aids. The thing is, you can only put off the math for so long. The smoke and mirrors cannot change the numbers.
I agree completely. The cost burden of Social Security & Medicare alone will take us down the tubes.
This is all deliberate though. The power elites wanted Americans to take on too much debt. Now they will be able to devalue our dollar and "save" us with a new currency, the "Amero", which is one more step to a one-world currency that they control and a one world dictatorship.
American model of monopoly capitalism has failed, period.
Not to split hairs, but I'd say we have "oligopoly capitalism" or "crony capitalism". That is, we have competition, but a limited amount. Now, the pendulum is swinging toward more socialism, which is also not sustainable.
We need true competition, which would be true free market captialism. Most people think the free market has failed. But what people don't realize is that the crony capitalism we've had is not real capitalism. And the socialism that Obama and the Democrats want to replace it with will only make matters worse.
Of course, the real goal is to destroy our economy and the dollar, so that they can "save" us with a new currency, the Amero....so that this kind of economic catastrophe "can never happen again". When will we get wise to this?
