Drugs - most of them are there because of either a drug addiction or an underlying mental illness that they were using drugs to self medicate.
Then there are those that just thoroughly enjoy the criminal lifestyle.

They are ALL there because they volitionally suppressed their conscience in order to continually live above the Law . It was their pride.

Once again...

This "1 in 15" number is NOT correct. It is a conclusion that involves taking raw numbers, ignoring all the contributing factors (like repeat inmates) and drawing making misleading statements.

This is the 3rd time that I've asked for links to the actual studies, statistics and methods of calculation. Each request has been ignored. This is another example of how misleading numbers are carelessly thrown out, people are too lazy or ignorant to actually see if they're true, and urban legends are born.

1 in 15 Americans will NOT serve time in a Federal or State Prison. Absolutely false.

Not only that, the 'do away with stupid drug laws' thing is a fallcy. I worked in a prison. While many were serving time for drugs, that was not their primary violation. Most of them had possession raps, but were also serving sentences for dealing, B&E, assualt, armed robbery, etc.

Take away the possession laws and you won't see much of a dowturn, if any, is prison population. If possession is the only charge, they usually get suspended sentences or probabtion.

I never met a single person in prison for only possession. Never.

Everybody does that to some extent. Most people suppress their conscience every day, but in ways that do not happen to be against the law.

Then you had better contact The Crestview News , Crestview, Fl. and tell them of your latest revelation , for, it they printed this statistic on the front page of the newspaper and gave the source as the U.S. Dept. of Justice.

Perhaps not against instituted Civil Laws., but that doesnt mean that suppressing ones moral conscience is a correct thing to do .

I'm looking at the Dept of Justice site, and yes, THEY are the ones making the stupid assumption - making statements that are not supported by the numbers.

5.6 million people is not "1 in 15 Americans". Unless, of course, there are only 84 million Americans...

2.7% of adults is not "1 in 15 Americans". 6.6% would be "1 in 15 Americans".

This is extremely typical of people who take raw statistics, twist and distort them, and draw false conclusions. Or maybe it's just the way this "new math" works.

The newspaper article said : ' ..... WILL spend time in a Federal or State prison ' . That verbage indicates to me that it will be during ones lifetime on the order of 1 in 15 Americans . Obviously then, the U.S. Dept of Justice is forecasting how many will see Prison walls taking into account U.S. population growth , current crime stats, and expected crime stats . Bear in mind...the article did not include County jails or City jails....so taking those into account, it could be even higher. Moreover, what do you see as the primary cause for the moral degradation in America ?
